PlayStation Plus: PlayStation Plus: Expiration dates discovered on free games

Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription service was recently relaunched with additional booking options. Apparently, the changes now include expiration dates for free games.

That reportedEurogamer. Accordingly, a section called “Last chance to play” was found in the catalog section of the service. This makes it absolutely clear that the games contained therein will not be available for much longer.

Playstation Plus: Expiry dates affect Extra and Premium subscriptions

According to the report, this currently affects Shadow Warrior 3 (PS4) and Syberia (PS3). The first title should be online until July 5, 2022 with an extra subscription, while the latter will disappear from the premium option on July 19.

Sony has addressed the new practice in the FAQ section belonging to the service. It states that some games in the Games and Classics catalog will have expiration dates, but these should be communicated in advance.

Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K22 and more also affected

While only two titles are currently listed in the “Last chance to play” section, a manual search has also been used to find other games that also have an expiry date:

• NBA 2K22 – August 31st
• WRC 10 – 31 August
• Red Dead Redemption 2 – September 20th
• Red Dead Redemption – October 17th
• Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare – October 17th

Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that even more games will only be available temporarily. Nothing is currently known about the exact reasons for the expiry dates. However, it is quite possible that, similar to streaming services such as Netflix, various license agreements with the respective publishers and studios only provide for temporary use within the framework of PlayStation Plus. However, this also means that games could later return to the platform.
