Gaming content continues to thrive on YouTube. The platform has now given an insight into the figures for 2021: In Germany, around 9 million viewers followed around 600,000 active gaming channels.

“Gaming has gone mainstream”

YouTube’s Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan stated in a statement that video games have long since left the niche. Of course, this development is not new, but it was able to increase significantly, especially during the corona pandemic. With 32 percent growth, 2020 was the record year for the industry in Germany. And in 2021 there was another plus of 17 percent.

So it’s no wonder that this is also reflected on the video platform. After all, 700 of the 600,000 active gaming channels would have broken the 100,000 subscription mark in 2021. And the number of gaming content channels that generate more than $50,000 a year in revenue has increased by 30 percent.

YouTube at gamescom

According to Andreas Briese, YouTube Country Director for Germany and Central Europe, this is just further proof of the size of the gaming community. E-sports in particular are an important driver for the ongoing boom. That is why they are also represented at gamescom and will be there with shorts challenges for fans as well as creator workshops and networking events.
