New camera details for Pixel 7 and Pixel Tablet

A code analysis of the current version of Google’s camera app indicates that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro support 4K selfie videos. The Pixel Tablet also shows up in the code.

9to5Google regularly analyzes the code of different apps in the “APK Insight” section to uncover unknown functions of future smartphones. The technology blog recently took a close look at version 8.5 of Google’s camera app and found interesting information about the Pixel 7 and Pixel Tablet.

Pixel 7: Premium feature becomes standard

As reported by 9to5Google, Google has only recently started adding code for the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro to the camera app. Therefore, no major changes can be identified at the moment. However, 9to5Google already suspects that the upcoming Pixel 7 generation will not offer any major innovations in terms of camera equipment. However, the code analysis brought a small difference to light.

Lines of code are intended to reveal that both the Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel 7 allow 4K recording with the front camera. The current Pixel 6 only offers FHD resolution for selfie shots. Only the premium model Pixel 6 Pro allows videos in 4K. With the next generation of Pixels, Google seems to be making this premium feature standard.

First clues found about the Pixel Tablet

Another result of the code analysis: first details on Google’s still unreleased Pixel Tablet. However, the information revealed by 9to5Google is not surprising. According to the blog, the code shows that the upcoming Google tablet will only offer a rear camera. This is typical for tablets as their focus is less on photography. The code does not show how high the resolution of the rear camera will be.

In a direct comparison with the Pixel 6 series, it is also noticeable that the Pixel Tablet does not offer all camera features. The code contains no references to 4K recordings at 60 frames per second. Features like audio zoom, slow-motion videos, and action photos with panning effects also don’t seem to be supported. However, 9to5Google points out that it will still be a while before the Pixel Tablet is released and that a lot can still change in terms of camera functions.
