Feels hemmed in by fans – Major Twitch streamer no longer wants to show popular MMORPG

Asmongold is one of the biggest MMORPG streamers on Twitch. He became known with WoW, but he has also been known as the streamer of Final Fantasy XIV since 2021. After a break, he recently announced his return. You can find out why he no longer wants to play FFXIV on MeinMMO.

This is the situation:

Asmongold’s complicated relationship with FFXIV

In fact, it all started so well: After the Twitch star, known as a WoW streamer, betrayed his MMORPG in July 2021, the community welcomed him with open arms. Asmon himself initially had a lot of positive things to report. Above all, the plot and the raids had done it to him.

When he switched to the hit MMORPG Lost Ark in February 2022, there was resentment in the community. So rumors spread that Asmongold never liked Final Fantasy and was only getting paid to play it.

This went so far that he issued a statement in late March admitting he had quit FFXIV. This has less to do with Lost Ark and more to do with his frustration at not being able to play the rest of the game without continuing to stream story quests. Even then, he felt pressured by parts of his community to stream all his hours of FFXIV play.

At the same time, however, he also announced that he would not say goodbye forever and would come back if he had nothing to do in other games (dexerto.com).

That point seems to have been reached now, as in early June 2022, to the delight of fans, Asmon announced that it would resume FFXIV streams on June 21st. But that could soon be over.

Asmongold is worried about becoming a pure FFXIV streamer

Where does the concern come from? “Oh my god, they’re back!” exclaimed Asmongold on his 06/29/2022 stream while looking at his subreddit. It was triggered by the flood of Final Fantasy XIV-related posts that followed his announced return to the popular MMORPG. This seems to be exactly the situation he wanted to avoid.

I don’t want one of those situations where my stream becomes the Final Fantasy stream ever again. […] Every post is about Final Fantasy, everything else gets downvoted and then as soon as I don’t play it people get mad.

This will be very confining, he added. After all, he also wants to watch videos or show his reactions. When asked if he actually likes the game now, Asmongold replied that his content could go in two possible directions.

Either he’s playing a game he likes and the community is having fun, or he’s playing something he basically likes but the fans are always bickering and judging every opinion, no matter how casually expressed. That is the case with FF14.

He doesn’t think the users behind the flood of posts are just trolls, they know too well for that. He also doesn’t like the idea of simply ignoring or banning the people concerned. Why would he want to exclude his own audience?

In the end, it all boils down to not wanting to do anything he doesn’t enjoy. He would like to play the game without people trying to find something negative everywhere. His clear statement:

If this keeps happening, I just won’t play it.

Asmongold also points out that there has never been such a reaction to any other game, except perhaps World of Warcraft Classic. And saying goodbye to it was the best decision he has ever made for his stream.

The community has a mixed reaction

From understanding to disappointment to frustration, everything is included: Basically, the fans seem to understand Asmongold’s situation. One or the other is disappointed because he was very happy about the return of the Final Fantasy streams.

But there are also more critical voices. Asmongold’s statement that the anger about his intros or meme streams that were too long only started with FFXIV is not correct. There have been more and more posts on the subject lately, and not just from the Final Fantasy corner.

Asmongold’s subreddit has already responded to the situation (via reddit.com). In the future, all posts and comments that put pressure on the streamer or complain about what they are playing or not playing will be removed.
