Stealth Games: These are the ten best stealth games in recent years

We have no chance against the big opponents in the gloomy world. Only sneaking helps.

As early as the 1980s, sneaking in video games was on the rise. Although titles like 005, Castle Wolfenstein and Saboteur cannot be compared to today’s stealth games, this period is still considered to be the origin of the genre. Even the arcade classic Pac-Man from 1980 focuses on stealth. Sneak games then experienced their heyday in the mid-2000s. With great titles like Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory or Hitman: Blood Money, there was a huge choice for stealth fans during this time.

Compared to that time, the mass of games in the genre has decreased significantly nowadays. The Assassin’s Creed brand has been evolving away from classic stealth gameplay to action RPG for years, and we’re still waiting in vain for a new Splinter Cell. In addition to the recently released Sniper Elite 5 and the Hitman series, indies are now more likely to cover this area. Of course, there are also blockbusters like Tomb Raider and Call of Duty, which offer a wide range of gameplay options. In our buyer’s guide, we’ve listed the ten best stealth games of the last few years for you.

Dark, scary and really grotesque: This is the world of Little Nightmares 2. Four years after the first part, the sequel also delivers an extremely entertaining horror adventure. This time we step into the shoes of Mono, a shy boy who prefers to cover his face with a paper bag.

But Six, the protagonist with the obligatory yellow raincoat from part one, is still part of the game. This time as our AI partner. Together, the two embark on a spooky journey through a gritty forest, a gritty school, and an even grittier asylum.

Through the sections we move mostly quite defenseless. Sneaking, running and hiding are the order of the day against our overpowering enemies. Only occasionally do we have the opportunity to use an object as a melee weapon.

Due to the gloomy atmosphere, the stress level keeps rising when playing through Little Nightmares 2. Not because the game relies on unnecessary jumpscares, but on the contrary, there is also an oppressive silence in between, which only very, very rarely gives us a feeling of security.

Death can lurk around every corner if you take a wrong step or make a wrong decision. The developer Tarsier Studios sets the bar even higher with the second part in contrast to the first. When it comes to horror and stealth gameplay, there aren’t many games that can compete with the indie title.

Weird West not only shines with grandiose stealth interludes, but also with an extremely dynamic game world, an interesting story and a lot of variety. The dark fantasy RPG was only released a few months ago and has therefore made it into our list as the latest game.

Rule number 7: Always hide the corpses or knocked out people, otherwise that's it with the secrecy.

The success of the western role-playing game, which with a lot of practice can theoretically be played through without a single exchange of fire, is no coincidence. The heads behind the WolfEye development studio are former employees of Arkane Studios.

The influences from Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah and Dishonored can be seen at first glance in Weird West’s gameplay. Certain sections even require silent action, as soon as we are caught, we have to start the job all over again.

Although these pure stealth orders are rare, after all, the crazy adventure is a huge portion of variety, but the missions provide a lot of thrills.

The story of the wondrous west is told in five chapters. In each one we slip into the skin of a different character. All have their own strengths and weaknesses. Due to the dynamic game world, our former characters are not safe even after completing their story, because as companions they support us in the fight against outlaws, werewolves and other monsters. However, those who sneak quietly through the opponents have a better chance of keeping all characters alive.

With little brother Hugo in our arms, we make our way past the inquisitors.

In A Plague Tale: Innocence, on the other hand, being stealthy is a must. Our main character Amicia has rather limited possibilities to actively defend herself and her brother Hugo. Although we get a slingshot, a torch and knowledge of alchemy in the course of the action-adventure, they serve more as a distraction against the inquisitors and the superiority of the rats.

So in many sections we are busy maneuvering Hugo and ourselves past various enemies, hiding and deceiving guards. If we should be caught, in many cases the only solution is to flee.

This cat-and-mouse game paired with a gripping story ensures that A Plague Tale: Innocence is an atmospheric showcase. The interaction of the siblings also brings a good portion of emotionality into play.

After all, Amicia and Hugo only really get to know each other in the course of the story, since the little brother suffers from a mysterious illness and has spent almost his entire life in the hospital room.
