The Simpsons: Hit & Run is getting a fan remake with open world in Unreal Engine 5

from Julius Bald
Developer Reuben “Reubs” Ward has released a video showing a very nice remake of The Simpsons: Hit & Run. However, fans should lower their hopes a little: the project will probably never be released to the public.

Especially with video game classics, videos of potential fan remakes appear from time to time, showing how these digital gems could shine in a new light. So there was only recently a concept that shows Grand Theft Auto III in the Unreal Engine 5 and is quite impressive. When it comes to projects like this, the community often asks why the developer studios don’t revisit certain video game classics and cover them with a fresh engine and graphics.

The Simpsons: Hit & Run – Impressive remake powered by Unreal Engine 5

The answer to this is usually that the licenses for many past titles are not held by the developer studios or even publishers of the time. This also applies to the current project by Reuben “Reubs” Ward, who has released a video for a fan remake of The Simpsons: Hit & Run. The video is 17 minutes and gives a detailed insight into his development work and various mechanics of the game. “Reubs” wants to equip the title with an open world and introduce many quality of life improvements and an online mode.

Unreal Engine 5 is currently being used for this fan remake. However, it should be said right away: “Reubs” states that this project is for entertainment purposes only and will probably never be available for download. The developer previously featured an earlier version of the game on their Patreon page, but the associated video has already been deleted there. Joe McGinn, lead designer on the original The Simpsons: Hit & Run, has responded to the project: “Amazing what you’ve done! This really gives a taste of what a full modern remaster could be.”
