A YouTuber dies at the age of 23 – his favorite game Minecraft is a monument to him
On June 30, 2022, the death of popular YouTuber Technoblade shook not only the Minecraft community. After tributes from other content creators and even Elon Musk, Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, has now also memorialized him.

Techno, whose real name was Alex, was always very concerned about his privacy and that of his family. So fans knew neither his real name nor his face until his death. Instead, he was primarily associated with his Minecraft skin, a crowned pig wearing a royal outfit. This became his trademark and not only adorned his social media channels, but also numerous fan articles.
This is exactly what Minecraft studio Mojang is alluding to with its tribute to the late content creator. If you open the current version of the Minecraft launcher, you can discover a change in the background of the title image. The piggy on the right now wears the YouTuber’s crown.
The reaction from fans on Twitter was positive. Some even said they were moved to tears. For others, the homage doesn’t go far enough. There are already petitions on change.org calling on Mojang to add a statue or a crowned pig to the game as a rare spawn.
Whether the change in the launcher should be permanent or just temporary is not yet known.

Technoblade is also remembered elsewhere. He gained notoriety on the minigame server Hypixel, where he won the “Great Potato War” in 2020. There you can currently leave a message to be printed out and handed over to Techno’s family:
Also in 2020, Technoblade joined the RPG survival server Dream SMP. He shared a friendly rivalry with its co-founder, well-known Minecraft YouTuber Dream, for the title of “best Minecraft player”. Technoblade grabbed this title in a tournament announced by YouTuber MrBeast in August 2020. Dream posted an obituary on YouTube calling for support of Techno’s family and continued respect for their desire for privacy.
But expressions of grief also appeared from a rather unexpected direction. In addition to content creators from the gaming scene, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and author John Green also commented on the death of the YouTuber. Technoblade’s son erected this monument together with a friend:

Technoblade had 10.9 million subscribers on YouTube and averaged several million views per video. He gained special status through his PvP skills in Minecraft and was part of the Minecraft multiplayer server Dream SNP and the Minecraft server Hypixel.
