Amazon Prime: Canceling a subscription is becoming easier

In the future, it should be easier to cancel a subscription to Amazon Prime. This is to be done in the interest of consumer protection and will apply from July.

Soon one will appear important change for Amazon Prime customers in the EU. So it should soon be much easier to cancel your own subscription to the shipping giant. So far, the termination process has not complied with the requirements of EU consumer protection.
This decision is the result of discussions between the European Commission, national consumer protection authorities and Amazon. The reason for the negotiations about the subscription was one Complaint early 2021which emanated from the European Consumers’ Association, the Norwegian Consumer Council and the Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue.
It was criticized that the termination process for Amazon Prime was too cumbersome and not consumer-friendly. According to them, this is mainly due to one thing confusing menu navigation and unclear formulationswhy it up to seven clicks until the final deregistration. In the future, two clicks should be enough.
Amazon has committed to implementing these changes on all of its EU websites and for all devices European Commission press release. The changes are apparently planned for the July 1, 2022. EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders explained the outcome of the negotiations:
“Online subscriptions can be a handy thing, signing up is usually straightforward. Unsubscribing should be just as easy. Consumers must not be subjected to any pressure from the platforms when exercising their rights. In any case, one thing is clear: manipulative design and “dark patterns” are forbidden. I applaud Amazon’s commitment to simplifying its processes to give consumers freedom of choice and easy opt-out.”
