Hearthstone is giving players card packs worth up to €180

Players claim Blizzard is giving them 150 card packs in Hearthstone right now – why are the developers wearing the donation pants?

In the Hearthstone subreddit, a number of posts have been piling up over the past few days that have led to a lot of skepticism and disbelief. Some former players claimed that they suddenly had a gift from Blizzard for Hearthstone on Battle.net. There should have been a whopping 150 card packs that you “just got” as a gift. Others were only gifted 20 card packs.

But what’s up with that?

Well – a lot. Because it’s true. More and more players are reporting that they received numerous packs for free.

What players are affected? In conversation with PC gamers Blizzard explained that this was a test limited to certain regions. More precisely it says:

We conduct many different limited and targeted tests to find out what drives the interest of new, former or current players, which is normal practice in this industry. This was a region-specific test for Hearthstone in the UK and France, for a subset of relevant players who were previously sorted into random groups and then received a corresponding offer of between 20 and 150 packs.

Incidentally, who was offered how many packs is said to have been completely random – after all, the players were put into different, random groups.

However, since the test was apparently limited to France and the United Kingdom, nobody in Germany should be hoping for such a gift at the moment.

How much is that worth? Some may have rubbed their eyes in wonder as they logged onto Battle.net. Because 150 card packs correspond to a value of 150 euros, assuming the cheapest pre-order offer. If you assume the “current” price, i.e. without pre-order discounts, then the value even increases to around 180 euros – a pretty handsome sum.

Blizzard is giving away a lot right now: Apparently, Blizzard is in the mood for donations and is trying to get many former players back into the Battle.net cosmos. Just a few days ago we reported that former World of Warcraft players suddenly had the Epic Edition of WoW: Shadowlands in their account as a gift – this is the most expensive variant of the current expansion of the MMORPG.

What do you think? A good thing to win back former players? Or mean to the loyal, existing customers who don’t get something like this?
