Microsoft’s DirectStorage feature should be used for the first time with the release of Forspoken and should improve performance. However, both have now been postponed.
news
With DirectStorage, Microsoft wanted to offer a new function this year that significantly improves the performance of systems with complex game titles. Presumably the feature will, however only available in 2023 as it was supposed to be released alongside Sony’s Forspoken.
This was recently postponed a second time, to an indefinite period of time in 2023. Forspoken is said to be the first of many games to use Microsoft DirectStorage. Some of these achieved one up to 70% better performance by using the feature.
How DirectStorage works is already in the name, because here the data is forwarded directly from the NVMe SSD via the main memory to the graphics card. All data will then compressed in the VRAM of the graphics cardbuffered and decompressed again without first having to go through the hard way of the CPU.
It all results in Significantly faster loading and access times. CPU utilization is reduced, which also benefits performance. Nvidia and AMD already offer similar technology in the form of RTX IO and SmartAccess Storage.
the Direct Storage API has been available since July 2021 and can be used by developer studios. It is important for gamers to know that DirectStorage Compatible with Windows 10 and 11 is, but the latter is recommended by Microsoft for using the feature.
transition or not?
