Official: Rockstar lets Red Dead Online slowly die and GTA 6 is to blame

Red Dead Online fans now believe Rockstar is trolling them

RDO will no longer receive story expansions.

RDO will no longer receive story expansions.

Parts of the community have planned a digital “funeral” for Red Dead Online for the coming week – including a black ribbon. The action should actually draw attention to the fact that Rockstar cares too little about the game and encourage the development of further content updates. Unfortunately, the action comes too late, because the studio has now officially announced that it will no longer publish any new expansions for RDO. So after the burial there will be no resurrection.

No more major updates for Red Dead Online

It’s all about this: Rockstar regularly releases updates for its online titles GTA Online and Red Dead Online, bringing new story missions, gameplay mechanics and other content. In the case of RDO, however, there will no longer be such updates, although the release of the Blood Money story expansion will be celebrated next week. The reason for the decision, in addition to the moderate success of the title, is above all the development of GTA 6 (via IGN):

Over the past few years we’ve steadily channeled more development resources towards the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series – we understand more than ever the need to exceed player expectations and make this next installment the best it can be. Because of this, we’re in the process of making some changes to the way we support Red Dead Online.

Blood Money was the last RDO story expansion:

Life-sustaining measures remain in place: That doesn’t mean, however, that Rockstar will stop supporting Red Dead Online entirely. Smaller content such as new specialist roles, story-based co-op missions and telegram missions will continue to exist. And of course it will be ensured in the coming months that the online title runs properly and that there are no bugs in the digital West.

How much longer do we have to wait for GTA 6?

At the beginning of February, the development of GTA 6 was officially confirmed by Rockstar for the first time. The studio still doesn’t want to release any further information, but there are a lot of rumors about it:

As far as the release of the next Grand Theft Auto is concerned, we can only speculate, just like the experts. Some assume a release in 2024, others speak of 2025 and there are even horror scenarios circulating about a launch in 2026. At least we now know that development is in full swing, as resources are already being diverted from other games.

What are your thoughts on Rockstar’s decision to more or less ditch RDO?
