The 10 most played MMORPGs on Steam in July 2022

The 10 most played MMORPGs on Steam in July 2022

MMORPGs thrive on having many players. We at MeinMMO have therefore looked at which will have the highest number of players on Steam in July 2022.

How was the list created? To create the top 10, we looked at the average player count of MMORPGs over the last 30 days. The data comes from the page steamchartswhich tracks and processes the numbers.

However, the numbers only include players who start the game via Steam. Most MMORPGs also have their own clients, whose numbers we cannot see. So the exact numbers are probably much higher.

On the other hand, if you are looking for the MMORPGs with the best reviews, you will find them here: The 10 MMORPGs on Steam with the best reviews in 2022.

These are places 10 to 4

3rd place – The Elder Scrolls Online

  • Focus of the MMORPG: Story and world exploration
  • number of players: 17,036 average players over the last 30 days
  • Trending player numbers: Increasing since June 2022
  • Business model: Buy2Play and optional subscription
  • Developer: ZeniMax

What kind of game is this? The MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online has been around for 8 years and allows its fans to experience the worlds of the Elder Scrolls together with others.

The game will be expanded again and again during its lifetime and will receive large expansions and smaller DLCs. The last major expansion was released with High Isle in June 2022. It caused a sharp increase in the number of players on Steam.

In addition to these expansions and DLCs, there are always interesting events and content in ESO that you may not be used to. When you’re out and about in ESO, exciting stories and tricky PvE raids await you.

ESO takes place in a world that invites exploration and shows players already familiar Elder Scrolls areas as well as completely new places.

For PvP friends, the MMORPG offers exciting battles in various modes and different numbers of players, but PvP is a smaller part of the game.

Everything you need to know about The Elder Scrolls Online in 2 minutes

Who is it interesting for? The Elder Scrolls Online is for players who:

  • Are fans of other Elder Scrolls parts and want to share the experience with other players
  • like to get lost in a world and explore places
  • like a first-person perspective
  • place little value on PvP and prefer PvE

ESO is a good alternative to story and world-related MMORPGs like Guild Wars 2 or FFXIV, but if you’re looking for a grinder like Black Desert or Lost Ark, you probably won’t be happy.

2nd place – Final Fantasy XIV

  • Focus of the MMORPG: Story, Roleplay and Instances
  • number of players: 23,835 averaged players in the last 30 days
  • Trending player numbers: Increased sharply in 2021, currently falling
  • Business model: Basic game Free2Play with restrictions, subscription and Buy2Play for extensions
  • Developer: Square Enix

What kind of game is this? Final Fantasy XIV has been one of the most popular MMORPGs ever since 2013. It focuses on an emotional story and offers players the opportunity to purchase multiple DLCs to continue the story and level up. The Endwalker expansion was released in 2021.

In addition to the story, you can expect exciting PvE content such as dungeons, boss fights and raids. You only need one character for this in FFXIV, because the classes are called jobs in FFXIV and if you have a lot of time, you can level each of them to level 90.

The combat system relies on tab targeting, which feels rather sluggish at first, but gets much better the more skills you unlock.

You can also level up different crafting and gathering classes, buy a house and soon even design your own island.

You can now play the game for free up to level 60, but after that you have to buy an extension and take out a subscription to continue playing. However, the free trial version is not available on Steam.

Everything you need to know about the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV – in 2 minutes

Who is it interesting for? FFXIV is primarily aimed at players who:

  • can concentrate on the story and want to experience an immersive story
  • Prefer tab targeting
  • looking for a challenge in the PvE endgame
  • looking for a friendly community
  • like a classic Holy Trinity (tank, DD, healer).

The community is praised by gamers worldwide. Dealing with each other is (in most cases) very friendly and considerate, which is a big contrast to other MMORPGs, whose communities are rather toxic.

1st place – Lost Ark

  • Focus of the MMORPG: Grinding, Instances, Exploration
  • number of players: 384,377 average players over the last 30 days
  • Trending number of players: Decreasing, but probably due to the ban of numerous bots
  • Business model: Free2Play
  • Developer: Amazon and Smilegate

What kind of game is this? Lost Ark is an action MMORPG that just launched in February of this year. You choose your character from 15 classes and explore the world of Arkesia in the ISO perspective.

First you dive into the story. After the prologue you are level 10, get your first mount and level up to 50 through the story. The story is about finding a total of 7 arks and handing them over to an NPC. You travel across different continents.

At level 50 you reach the endgame of Lost Ark and that’s where the actual game begins. Every day you complete dungeons and raids to farm materials and improve your equipment. With a higher item level, you unlock more content, which ultimately continues the story.

In addition, you can sail from about level 40 and explore numerous islands, farm and participate in events.

The deeper you delve into the endgame, the more difficult the content becomes. Currently, players are biting their teeth on Vykas, the boss of the second Legion Raid.

The 5 reasons for the incredible success of Lost Ark

Who is it interesting for? Lost Ark is aimed at players who

  • like to grind and fight many opponents at the same time, as is the case in chaos dungeons
  • Like iso perspective and action-packed combat
  • appreciate interesting mechanics and don’t be afraid to search the internet for guides
  • are patient and don’t mind taking 10 tries for a piece of content
  • want to explore a large, open world on land and on the water

The developers of Lost Ark promise monthly updates and weekly patches, so that new content comes quickly and new classes are introduced. There have been a few issues with speed lately though. The double-postponed June update finally hit the game on June 30th and brought a few changes.
