F1 22 VR: Only the real Formula 1 is more fun
Spectacular F1 weekends at Silverstone and Spielberg are behind us. The race in England, the home of motorsport, had a lot to offer: a serious accident that fortunately had a minor outcome for everyone involved, grandiose overtaking manoeuvres, gripping action and a debut winner with Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz. In Austria, his teammate Charles Leclerc won after a long fight against world champion Max Verstappen.
Due to the rule changes for this year’s season, which also apply to the official game of the Formula 1 World Championship F1 22 (buy now ) are integrated, the driving behavior of the cars has changed significantly. More understeer and generally less grip will make lap times worse, but the cars can follow each other more closely, making for close and exciting races. In our However, the current title from developer Codemasters scores rather average in the test. Several factors are to blame for this, such as problems with the gamepad controls, unnecessary new features, an AI that is sometimes too aggressive and graphic errors. In addition to the Rift, the HTC Vive and the Index from Valve are officially compatible, but the rest of the glasses should also work without major problems. Playstation owners, on the other hand, look into the tube. Namely, F1 22 only supports the VR function on PC. According to Creative Director Lee Mather, an implementation for PSVR is also planned for the next few years.
In addition to Codemasters, the Behavior Interactive team was also involved in the development. The companies already worked together on the Dirt Rally series and brought a great VR experience to the market.
Before we start, however, we have to fight our way through a few small problems. After all, F1 22 is not a pure VR game and therefore has a very fiddly menu navigation, among other things.
In addition, every time we pull the glasses off our head, we get a warning message that doesn’t let us continue playing. So we can never scroll through the menus and make settings in a relaxed manner. This is particularly annoying before a race when we want to readjust our camera position in the cockpit.
