Gargoyles often stand between us and our goal in FromSoftware games. But the ones that stand in our way in Elden Ring’s Between Lands are different from the previous versions – and they have a much greater horror factor compared to the other designs.

Gargoyles are only partly made of stone

It’s all about this: In a new video, dataminer Zullie the Witch takes a close look at the tall enemies we encounter, for example, in front of the beast’s sanctuary or in the capital Leyndell.

Traditionally, gargoyles are stone creatures that also decorate house facades in reality. In previous games like Dark Souls, these creatures looked like living cousins of their stone counterparts. However, Elden Ring takes a more experimental approach. Zullie dissects a gargoyle in the video and shows that while its wings appear stone, the rest of the body is a different matter altogether. This one seems to be flesh and blood and now it’s getting dark:

Did you notice that the gargoyles (at least some that we can see) possess not one but two faces? These seem rather uncleanly put together and this motif runs through below. Several bodies of living beings have been put together here and if you read carefully, you will even learn what is used to hold them together.

You can see it for yourself in the video here:

Corpse wax holds body parts together

Those who can read item descriptions have a clear advantage in From games. In the text for a weapon used by the gargoyles, we learn another fact about the enemies. You may have noticed that the gargoyle weapons are covered in strange discolorations. This is corpse lipid (also known as corpse wax) that holds broken axes and swords together.

But we learn even more: The gargoyles themselves are also held together by this substance. Incidentally, this substance itself is not an invention of FromSoftware. Corpse wax actually exists. The technical term is adipocire, and it is a substance that forms on corpses when they are left in a damp environment.

More on Elden Ring:

What’s behind it? Zullie provides a suggestion in the video where the corpse wax could be cultivated in Elden Ring. Do you remember those nice vessel creatures? And did you also notice that, for example, fallen warriors are stored in them? Unfortunately, we don’t find out from the game who created the gargoyles and which bodies were used exactly or where the corpse wax came from.

But Zullie points out that these are just once more creatures cruelly created and then left behind. In the video we can also see the dead or “broken” gargoyles that we find in the game world.

Have you noticed that the gargoyles in Elden Ring are similar and what do you think of this alternative design of the classic gothic creatures?
