From Ryzen 7000: MSI with screwless M.2 SSD assembly for some X670 and B650 motherboards

At this year’s Computex, MSI has already shown a mounting system that can be used to mount M.2 SSDs on future mainboards without screws and therefore without tools. From the leaker @g01d3nm4ng0 another picture and two drawings showing the system have now been published. This is to be introduced for the first time with the motherboards with chipset X670 / B650 intended for the Ryzen 7000 processors.

Tool-free SSD assembly

The mounting system planned by MSI is apparently called “Screwless M.2 Shield Frozr” and consists of a holding device for the SSD and a cooler, which can also be mounted without tools. As already in Computex video was seenthe SSD itself is held in position by a pre-assembled retaining pin, which means that it only has to be inserted into the connection and then holds itself in position.

The sprawling Frozr cooler can then be stowed above by sliding it into two retention slots above the M.2 connector and then pushing down while levering on the opposite end of the connector. Overall, MSI apparently wants to make assembly easier with this design than is the case with the competition.

Since screwing on an M.2 SSD doesn’t take too much time anyway, the time saved by MSI’s new mounting system should only be small. Probably due to the costs associated with the system, it will also only be used on some mainboards. The released promotional slide talks about the enthusiast-oriented MEG and the gamer-oriented MPG series.
