Nintendo: Gaming giant buys animation film studio

Nintendo (Unternehmen) von Nintendo

What is Nintendo actually up to? The well-known and popular hardware and software manufacturer from Japan has recently incorporated a company that doesn’t actually come into direct contact with games.

That goes at least from a separate communication from the company. Accordingly, Nintendo has bought the Japanese animation film company Dynamo Pictures and will now rename it Nintendo Pictures.

Nintendo Pictures: Still vague plans

What exactly the group behind Super Mario and the Pokémon has planned with its new acquisition is not yet clear from the brief letter. However, fans of Nintendo can already look forward to plenty of new content for well-known titles. Because with Nintendo Pictures you want to develop “visual content” and use your own brands.

Nintendo and Dynamo Pictures have previously collaborated on a number of Pikmin short films. It is therefore quite obvious that such projects will be increasingly produced in the future. Dynamo Pictures (now Nintendo Pictures) also specializes in computer graphics, animation and motion capture. With this expertise, they were involved in animated films about Dragon Ball, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Final Fantasy and Resident Evil, among others.

Is Nintendo now producing its own blockbuster movies?

It is not yet clear when the first Nintendo Pictures projects will appear. It is also not known what magnitude they will ultimately be. In view of Dynamo Pictures’ career so far, it is quite conceivable that high-budget blockbusters such as Master Detective Pikachu or the upcoming Super Mario film with Chris Pratt as narrator will not be on the agenda – at most supporting work in the animation area is conceivable for such projects.

However, video game adaptations as films and series remain very popular: A second season of the Netflix series is on the way to Cuphead; The streaming service recently released a new Resident Evil series. And how good is Sonic The Hedgehog 2? We’ll tell you in our review of the film.
