There was a huge CS:GO tournament in Cologne over the weekend: “Forget Counter-Strike, forget e-sports, he could be the best player ever”
From July 15 to July 17, 2022, the e-sports event IEM Cologne 2022 took place in Cologne: the best teams in the world in Counter Strike: Global Offensive competed against each other. In a spectacular final, the two CS:GO greats NAVI and FaZe Clan met and played for the winner’s prize money of around 390,000 euros.
What was that event? The IEM Cologne 2022 event took place from July 15 to 17, 2022 and took place as a live event in the LANXESS Arena. The prize money pool totaled around 986,000 euros.
After there were no more e-sports tournaments in front of a live audience in 2020 and 2021 due to Corona, CS:GO has experienced an upswing since May 2022: since then it has been possible to play in front of an audience again.
The grand final between Navi and Faze Clan was on Sunday 17th July 2022. In the end, Faze Clan narrowly won 3-2 against NAVI.
Big applause for star players from Ukraine
Who could be the best player of all time? Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev (24) is a dominant esports player in the CS:GO space. He is often even called the best CS:GO player in the world. This was also the case at the IEM in Cologne, where he was announced with the words: “Forget Counter Strike, forget e-sports, he could be the best player of all time.”
When the announcement was made, the arena in Cologne exploded. The commentator later said the hall in Cologne absolutely freaked out, the crowd was fantastic. It was crazy loud at every player performance (via twitter).
Since 2016, s1mple has been playing in the professional team Natus Vincere (NaVI) as an AWPler. The professional gamer also streams gaming videos on Twitch. His channel currently has 3.2 million followers (as of July 18, 2022, via twitch)

What was the map line-up like in the final?
- FaZe chose inferno (Won from FaZe 16:13)
- NAVI chose over pass (Won by NAVI 16:13)
- FaZe chose Ancient (Won by NAVI 19:16)
- NAVI chose miracle (Won from FaZe 16:9)
- nuke (Won from FaZe 16:14)
How did the final match between Navi and Faze Clan go?
FaZe Clan started the match on a strong 5 round winning streak. s1mple then managed to turn the tables. There was an intermediate score of 9:6 and later 12:8 for NAVI. However, FaZe then caught up and won the round 16:13 against NAVI.
The 2nd round was a head-to-head match between the two teams. NAVI then took the lead with 15:11 and finally won with 16:13.
In the following match, NAVI led extremely with 15:4. In fact, FaZe Clan managed to catch up properly, but still lost the match with 16:19.
NAVI did well in Round 4 but was overtaken by FaZe relatively quickly. FaZe ultimately won 16-9.
The final round started very successfully for NAVI. The team took a 5-0 lead. FaZe caught up and it was a 6-6 tie. Furthermore, NAVI stayed strong in the match and led 8:7. FaZe caught up to a 13-9. NAVI didn’t let that sit and took the lead again at 14:13. In the end, however, FaZe won the game and won 16:14.
How much was the prize money in the final? Team FaZe won around 390,000 euros in prize money. NAVI received a sum of around 177,000 euros for second place.
After two years of the pandemic, a major e-sports event could finally take place in Cologne again. And also delivered an exciting final between two teams that are known as greats in the CS: GO area.
