Minecraft: For Mojang, NFTs are incompatible with a healthy community

How does Mojang feel about NFTs? Will the heavily criticized tokens find a place in Minecraft? The developer answers these questions in a new statement. The headline should already tell you the rough direction.

NFTs are not compatible with long-term gaming fun

Mojang, after some feedback from the community, decided to talk about its position on Minecraft and NFTs and blockchain. It’s a pretty fitting opportunity, since Mojang is in the process of updating its Acceptable Use Policy anyway.

In general, Mojang states that they “generally do not support or allow the integration of NFTs into Minecraft” and further elaborates on this point:

“With these rules, we want to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content. However, NFTs can create scarcity and exclusion models that conflict with our policies and the spirit of Minecraft.” Mojang in her statements.

“To ensure Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, we are not allowed to integrate blockchain technologies into our client and server applications, nor are Minecraft game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods allowed be leveraged through blockchain technology to create a scarce digital good.”

Mojang is keeping NFTs out of Minecraft but keeping an eye on developments

As Mojang explains, there are already NFTs from other companies related to Minecraft. For example, tokens associated with world files or skin packs, Minecraft-only collectible NFTs, and NFTs as rewards for non-game activities.

“NFTs are non-inclusive to the entire community, creating a scenario of the haves and have-nots. The speculative pricing and investment mentality surrounding NFTs diverts focus from the game and encourages profit-making, which we believe is inconsistent with long-term enjoyment and success of our players is compatible,” says Mojang. And that applies to every use of the tokens.

Additionally, Mojang is concerned about the reliability of third-party NFTs. An external marketplace to recognize the value of intrinsic creations is within the realm of possibility. The studio will also monitor the development of blockchain technologies, but at the moment has “no plans to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft”.
