Stray: Test comparison of German magazines [5/6] - News

This content would not be financially viable without the premium users. But we urgently need more supporters: You can help too!

With the last update, the rating of Computer Bild Games was added.

In our comparison of grades Stray we list tests, reviews, ratings or whatever from the following German online game magazines – regardless of the fact that some of them also publish print offers (aka booklets): CBS (Computer Bild Spiele), GameStar.de (& GamePro. de) GIGA.de, PCGames.de (& Videogameszone.de), Spieletipps.de and, of course, GamersGlobal.de – whereby we politely place ourselves at the end of the review list. What is important to us: A rating can only be a rough description of the game quality – please read the respective test report before you comment on a grade that might be out of the ordinary. The magazines Gameswelt.de and Eurogamer.de no longer appear since they decided to no longer write a rating under their tests.

If the cat adventure had probably ended in autumn or winter 2022, it would become a summer hit and attract everyone’s attention. […]The most beautiful moments always arise when “Stray” fully engages with its protagonist and puts her in the center of attention. The science fiction excursion also reveals weaknesses in the game – such as the limited freedom of movement, the missing map or the later interspersed combat interludes.

Cyberpunk and cute cats? The game had already captured my heart with these two elements. I wasn’t expecting a perfect game that sets new standards from the small development team at BlueTwelve Studio, I just wanted a sweet adventure in which I, as a cat, can explore an exciting world. And Stray gave me exactly that and more in every second of the game and then also packed an emotional story on top.

In the first hours of the game, you actually just walk from A to B, looking for the best way to get there and looking at the beautifully designed city. All in all, I actually liked this part of the game the best. There is something magical and playful about the first interactions with objects and characters in the game world. Later on, there are fewer and fewer new functions to discover.

BlueTwelve Studio also surprised me with how immersed I was in the really desolate cyberpunk world. The unique perspective when the cat climbs over old pipes onto roofs or sneaks between the legs of the robot inhabitants makes a big contribution to this. Admittedly, there are no major gameplay revolutions in Stray. It’s a simple adventure with a focus on exploration […]. But it doesn’t need to be more than that.

What suits a kitty as the main character and distinguishes Stray is a certain joy of discovery. Jumping Anywhere is a core mechanic, so naturally I want to scramble up furniture and see what I can knock over. Due to its charming qualities, Stray is very entertaining and fascinating at times, but apart from the unusual element of the cat as the main character, it doesn’t leave any particularly deep paw prints in my memory.
average rating 8.2 *Last checked: 07/22/2022, 10:25 am

We calculate the average rating based on the 10 system, so a “75” corresponds to a 7.5. Of course, the rating systems and philosophies differ in detail. If a magazine awards different ratings or grades depending on the platform, we use the highest for the average. If a test has been published by a magazine in the meantime, which is marked as “Not tested” here, we would be happy if you mention the rating along with a link as a comment.
