The Last of Us Part 1: 10 minute dev video shows improvements and gameplay

from Sarah Petzold
The developers at Naughty Dog have released a 10-minute video explaining what improvements will be included in The Last of Us Part 1 remake for Playstation 5. They mainly focused on the graphics, but also revealed details about the gameplay.

After various leaks had appeared in the past few days with hints as to how Naughty Dog would adapt the remake of The Last of Us (Part 1) compared to the original, the developers have now spoken out. In a video lasting about ten minutes, they explain their plans for graphics and gameplay – and confirm a large part of the previous leaks.

Remake with a focus on graphics, but rather few gameplay adjustments

Naughty Dog takes its cue from The Last of Us Part 1 remake including The Last of Us 2. A permadeath mode is said to be on board as well as improved workbenches, better physics effects and a more believable AI compared to the original game. Specifically, the remake comes with the following improvements, which the developers present in more detail in the video:

  • prettier and more detailed game environments
  • improved facial animations
  • new enemy and companion AI
  • 3D audio and dual sense controller support
  • a dedicated speedrun mode
  • new unlockable costumes
  • 60+ additional accessibility features (including audio description)

However, the changes to the gameplay still seem rather marginal. After all, The Last of Us Part 1 will appear as a remake for the PC, including the prologue chapter Left Behind. Sony gives September 2, 2022 as the release date. If you want, you can pre-order the game now for around 80 euros. The digital deluxe edition with additional bonus content costs just under 90 euros.
