A woman as the main character in GTA 6? That was long before – did you know?

In GTA history, there were several female characters that we were able to play.

Well-known industry insider Jason Schreier has stated that the long-awaited action title GTA 6 will most likely cast us into the role of a woman. The story is supposed to focus on a pair of siblings consisting of a man and a woman.

The news came as a surprise to many as it will be the first time we’ve played a female protagonist with her own backstory in the GTA franchise. But what many didn’t know: If we take a look at the history of all GTA games, it’s striking that, strictly speaking, we’re not playing a woman for the first time.

GTA had many female protagonists

When was the first time we could play a woman? In fact, there was the very first female lead in the first GTA part. But in Germany we didn’t hear much of it, because the four female main characters only existed in the English version. Players had the choice between:

Additionally, in the Game Boy Color port of GTA 2, there was an option to choose a female as the main character. Instead of slipping into the role of Claude Speed, players in the port could choose between six different characters, two of which are female: Candy and Gretchen.

Is the choice not enough for you? In GTA Online it is possible to create a female character. Using the character editor, we can choose from a variety of hairstyles, hair colors and accessories to customize the female protagonist even more than was ever possible before.

But none of the previous female characters had their own personality like the three main characters in GTA 5. Since the characters in GTA and GTA 2 were not voiced, we could only tell from the avatar and the name that we were playing a woman. In GTA Online, at least, there was more evidence that we were playing a woman, but she remained a soulless shell with no real backstory.

That should finally change in GTA 6. We play a Brazilian woman who was separated from her twin brother during her childhood. Many years later, they are supposed to meet on opposite sides in a drug war, which of course leads to problems. It remains to be seen to what extent we will switch between the two protagonists.
