The PlayStation 5 is now approaching its second birthday. Despite that, it’s still pretty hard to get hold of one of the consoles. If a few copies are available from retailers, they are often only offered in bundles and are sold out again quite quickly. You can now register for a PS5 with Sony yourself, but unfortunately the waiting times are also relatively high here.

Sales of PS5 consoles still quite sobering

The company is trying to boost production of the consoles, but so far the efforts have probably been in vain. In a span of three months, which ended on June 30 of this yearSony shipped 2.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles, which is only slightly more than the 2.3 million consoles shipped at the same time last year.

In fiscal 2021, Sony was able to sell 11.5 million consoles, for 2022 this number should increase to 18 million units sold. With the first quarter’s rather sobering figures, Sony now has to sell over 15 million consoles in the remaining three quarters to meet its own forecast.

Game sales for PlayStation consoles actually declined compared to last year, with 47.1 million games sold for PS4 and PS5 (buy now €706.98), compared to 63.6 million last year. However, Sony was already assuming that sales would decline here. These numbers may change a bit with the release of God of War Ragnarok and The Last of Us Part 1 later this year.

One reason for Sony’s rather poor numbers could be the overall increased prices. Video game consoles and games are still a kind of luxury item, which is why many people may choose to refrain from such spending.
