PlayStation Plus: 3 game highlights for Essential customers in August 2022
New month, new free games for Playstation Plus Essential! And for August 2022, those responsible for Sony have put together the best games package in many months! Look forward to three highlights that could hardly be more different.
3 games, 3 highlights
From August 2nd, 2022, all Playstation Plus customers can add the following three games to their library:
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Cross-Gen Deluxe Bundle | PS4, PS5
The first two games in the “Tony Hawk’s” skateboarding series were just pure fun-playing gold on the first Playstation. In addition to the eponymous skateboard icon, we blasted through the pipes with Bob Burnquist, Chad Muska, Jamie Thomas and many more. The insane tricks went smoothly after a short period of getting used to them, and the legendary soundtrack also spoiled our auditory canals.
If you missed the fun back then, no problem! Both games were blessed with a remaster two years ago by Vicarious Visions (now part of Blizzard) that gets a lot right. in the Review of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 colleague Christian gave it an 8 out of 10.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon | PS4, PS5
Always wanted to get a taste of the Yakuza series, but are you overwhelmed by the number of games that make up the main series? Then try your entry with Like A Dragon from 2020! In this RPG spinoff, a new protagonist awaits you in Kasuga, and instead of the action-packed battles of the predecessors, there are witty round battles. But don’t worry, many other strengths of the Yakuza series can also be found in Like A Dragon.
Colleague Dominik gave a 9 out of 10 at the time and wrote in his Review of Yakuza: Like a Dragon: “What I always liked about Yakuza was the contrast between the serious main story and the nonsense in the sub-stories. Like a Dragon manages to tell a compassionate story about the neglected people who have no place in society, be they involuntary criminals, homeless people, whores or alcoholic, but in the same breath the game contains quests in which a john is thrown naked out of a whorehouse with his cock covered in soap bubbles, but it still fits together beautifully.
It’s almost as if the Yakuza series was always designed for an RPG. This part is probably also the roughest, because the swear words fly every second and the violence is kept at it. And even if Kiryu always embodied the cool main character in the previous parts with his stoic nature, Kasuga has much more character because he is idiosyncratic and sometimes makes mistakes. I look forward to more stories with Ichiban Kasuga!”
Little Nightmares | PS4
Little Nightmares may be the smallest and oldest game of the August trio, but you should also give this gem a chance. The oppressive horror platformer emulates indie hits like Limbo or Inside, although it can never quite reach their class, but those who overlook a few gameplay flaws will be rewarded with a strong atmosphere and exciting sneaky interludes.
Colleague Felix gave at the time Trial of Little Nightmares a 7 out of 10 and wrote: “With games like Limbo, Inside or Unravel, you kick in open doors for me. That’s why I was particularly looking forward to Little Nightmares, especially since I find the setting – a childhood nightmare that has become a game! – very exciting. In fact, some scenes are also very coherent and worry made me feel uncomfortable, although I was also annoyed by the many inaccuracies in the controls, the sometimes unimaginative levels and the frequent trial and error.
The stealth part, i.e. those scenes in which I have to hide from the monstrous adults or flee from them, was just too big for me – more cool puzzles and less stealth would have done the game good! The fact that I was able to play through the short scary trip despite everything is thanks to its dense atmosphere – I was hoping for a lot more from Little Nightmares overall, but it’s still good for a few pleasantly oppressive hours.”
More Yakuza by the end of 2022
If you’ve gotten a taste for Yakuza: Like A Dragon, we have good news for you. Sony wants to bring a total of eight games from the Yakuza series to the Playstation Plus catalog by the end of 2022. Those who use the extra subscription should have access to Yakuza 0, Kiwami and Kiwami 2 in August. The remastered versions of parts 3 to 6 will follow at a later date (via playstation blog).
