Tomb Raider: We need a new Lara Croft again, Alicia Vikander doesn't do it anymore

A sequel to the 2018 Tomb Raider film is likely to be off the table for now.

This also means that the search for a new Lara Croft begins, because Alicia Vikander will probably no longer play her.

Everything at the beginning

As The Wrap reports that MGM has lost the rights to the Tomb Raider films as part of the takeover by Amazon.

Allegedly, they still had until May 2022 to take steps towards a sequel, but that doesn’t appear to have happened.

And now? Several Hollywood studios are said to be bidding for the rights to a film adaptation of Tomb Raider. According to insiders, this means that Vikander is no longer playing Lara Croft.

Future Tomb Raider films would thus be a “complete reboot”, currently there is no information on any actors or directors.

Vikander had already spoken about a possible sequel earlier this month and emphasized that it wasn’t all that simple.

“To be honest, it’s in someone else’s hands,” she said. However, she has shown a willingness to work on a new film with screenwriter Misha Green. But it will probably not come to that.

As far as Tomb Raider games go, Crystal Dynamics is currently working on a brand new installment based on Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.
