In Skull & Bones you can expect hardly any story, instead you should create your own adventure

Skull & Bones has been missing at sea for a number of years during which we have not heard anything official about the game. Anyone who hoped that Ubisoft would use the time to turn the pirate title into a fully-fledged adventure with an exciting story will be disappointed. In an interview, game director Ryan Barnard clarifies that the focus is not on the story.

Skull & Bones is a live service game with no classic campaign

It’s all about this: At the beginning of July, Skull & Bones surprisingly emerged from oblivion and showed up with a new trailer. Ubisoft presented some interesting new aspects, such as game sections on land. Unfortunately, we have to disappoint anyone who was hoping to finally be served a spiritual successor to Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. In conversation with True achievements Barnard clarifies once again that Skull & Bones will not offer a story campaign:

Skull and Bones is not a narrative game. There is a basic story that drives all of the lore, but that’s not the main focus. We want players to be able to craft their own stories and play the type of pirate they want to be.

In principle, Skull & Bones is a kind Sea of Thieves with realistic graphics. Only NPCs, so-called kingpins, exist in the game, each with their own background story. We experience this by completing orders for them and thus building a relationship with them.

In our preview you can read why you should keep your hopes in check for Skull & Bones:

Progression system instead of story: Instead of a campaign with story-driven missions, the focus is on the reputation mechanics. This progression system, called Infamy, gives us access to blueprints for new ships, weapons, and armor as we build our reputation as fearsome pirates.

Content for many years: As a live service title, Skull & Bones should be fed with new missions, content and events over several years. By the way, you can only trade and craft on land, because the fights only take place at sea. You can decide whether you want to play the title alone, together or against each other.

Skull & Bones will be released on November 8th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

What do you think of the direction of Skull & Bones and the lack of a strong narrative?
