Google is rumored to be planning to discontinue its Stadia streaming service soon. Such as “9to5Google” reported, the rumor about the end of Stadia first appeared in a Facebook group, but has since been removed. According to this, Stadia should already be switched off by the end of this summer.
The “Donny Jepp” account referred to Google employees in California, who explained the plans for Stadia in a seminar for retail employees.
Upon request via Twitter Google denied the rumor with humor. A statement addressed the alleged seminar in California and responded sarcastically, immediately announcing a new title for Stadio Pro:
“Just a heads up: An old colleague of mine is now one of Google’s social managers. They had a pretty big seminar in California last weekend, and long story short you can now get Wavetale on Stadia Pro at no extra cost until August to play.”
Before Google’s denial, the rumor was gaining momentum because Stadia had not yet had the resounding success that Google had probably hoped for from the streaming service. Instead, the service has become more of a niche product that caters to a rather small audience compared to Xbox Game Pass and Playstation Plus.
The strongest sign so far that Stadia was falling short of Google’s expectations was the hiring of a dedicated Stadia development studio in February 2021.
Google has also gained a reputation over the years for quickly putting the red line on many products instead of tweaking products over a long period of time if they fall short of expectations. The website documents this “Killed by Google”who quickly picked up the rumor from Facebook and shared on Twitter.
