Despite the mega success of Diablo Immortal: Blizzard cancels the World of Warcraft mobile MMO

WoW is getting a new expansion soon.

WoW is getting a new expansion soon.

Blizzard and its partners are currently raking in a lot of money with Diablo Immortal. Reason enough to repeat the concept with another well-known franchise of the company, right? Those responsible apparently see things differently, because it has now become known that a mobile MMO in the Warcraft universe has recently been canceled after several years of development.

Is Diablo Immortal to blame for the WoW spin-off?

It’s all about this: Blizzard is working closely with Chinese company NetEase, which is directly involved in several of the studio’s mobile projects, including Diablo Immortal. As Bloomberg reported, the success of Immortal was originally intended to be replicated with a World of Warcraft MMO for mobile devices. However, this will no longer happen because the team of 100 developers who are said to have been working on the game for three years has already been dissolved.

This is what the game was about: Information about the project is relatively thin as it was never officially announced. Even if it was an MMO, the game should be completely independent of World of Warcraft function. According to inside information, the story takes place in the WoW universe, but at a completely different time than the PC MMORPG.

Why was the game canceled? One would think that the huge success of Diablo Immortal should encourage those responsible to repeat the concept. However, the title is not particularly well received by fans and the trade press, despite ringing cash registers. But that probably didn’t have any impact on the WoW project. The partners allegedly disagreed on financial issues and therefore stopped the project together.

What’s next?

Bloomberg claims that the failed project could damage business relationships between Blizzard and NetEase in the long term. China’s second-largest gaming company takes over the publishing of Blizzard games such as World of Warcraft in addition to direct participation in mobile offshoots in China.

In addition to the MMO, an AR title in the WoW universe that was based on Pokémon GO was also allegedly canceled. Another mobile game will make it though: Warcraft Arclight Rumble should primarily appeal to fans of Clash Royale.

With World of Warcraft: Dragon Flight a new extension is in the works. Maybe we’ll get to play them on consoles too, as there have been rumors for at least a while that WoW might make it to Xbox thanks to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
