The developer of Life is Strange: True Colors can no longer imagine a return to the episodic format.

Life is Strange: True Colors is the latest installment in the narrative game series developed by Deck Nine Games.

In contrast to its predecessors, Life is Strange: True Colors was divided into individual chapters, but not consecutively in episode format.

A release in episode format is also no longer imaginable for the developer, as Senior Narrative Designer Philip Lawrence interviewed Rock, Paper, Shotgun betrayed.

As Lawrence explains, the full publication was the right decision. The reaction of the players was just as positive as the retention of the episodic structure.

“I can’t see us going back to the episodic model. The reaction was very positive. I think we made sure to keep the episodic structure because players seem to like that. It’s all part of Life is Strange’s DNA. As you can imagine, that was a decision that we talked about a lot and racked our brains about, but I think in hindsight it was the right decision.”

During development, care was taken to structure the story around the five chapters. It should feel like previous games in the series, while still allowing the community to engage, Lawrence said.

“I think from a creative point of view, we were able to focus on developing the story, getting the scripts in a good position, and then producing a game. So we didn’t have the inconvenience of the episodic model where you rush to produce the scripts for the first episode and then move on to the next episode. This approach is much more coherent and organic I think.”
