Kevin Feige wanted to let three Avengers die in Endgame
For many fans, Avengers: Endgame is if not the best, then at least the most emotional MCU film: Thanos’ victory in infinity war seemed to seal the fate of half of humanity and the well-loved squad of heroes around iron manCaptain America and Co. had no chance in the face of the purple space conqueror.
Even if the Avengers in end game Finally defeating Thanos did not happen without sacrifice: In addition to Black Widow, Tony Stark aka Iron Man also had to lose his life in battle – a death that Iron Man director Jon Favreau originally wanted to prevent. Marvel boss Kevin Feige also had other plans for the Avengers: He wanted more of the heroes to die.
Captain America, Iron Man and Thor: Three candidates for screen death in Avengers Endgame
This was revealed by the Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo in an interview with Joshua Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Horowitz asked the two a whole series of questions about the MCU, but above all wanted to know whether the director duo with the audience’s expectations generated after Infinity War regarding possible Avenger deaths played:
“Without question. Those were the stakes in the movie, right? If you don’t feel like it, you know… We knew that’s how viewers felt and we were acutely aware that after Infinity War we put them in the position had where they feel no one is safe. And there were a lot of rumors about who was going to die.”
“Kevin [Feige] actually suggested at one point that we all OGs [ursprünglichen Charaktere] take out of the game. We found that too aggressive and thought that the viewers wouldn’t be able to digest it. One or two characters making sacrifices in the film could create moments in the film where the action pauses and you have an emotional catharsis before moving on to the story and then adding more emotional catharsis.”
While CaptainAmerica Withdrew from the Avengers even without his death on the screen and returned to his original time, Thor, the god of thunder, still diligently enjoys being a hero. The fourth film of the blonde hammer swinger, Thor: Love and Thunderwas only moderately well received by fans and critics, as you can read in our review of the film.
The Avengers continue, even without Iron Man and Co.
Of course, MCU fans already know that the Avengers will continue after Endgame. Marvel recently announced two new Avengers movies, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars on May 2, 2025 and on November 7, 2025 appear and should represent the finale of phase 6. There then stands the antagonist Kang, the conqueror in the limelight who, according to Kevin Feige, should become “very different from Thanos”. It will not be directed by the Russo brothers, but by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
