from Thilo Bayer
There are new details about the huge Samsung Odyssey Ark gaming monitor. The curved 55-inch model with UHD resolution should be available for pre-order at the end of August – at a high price.

As Samsung confirms, the Odyssey Ark can be purchased from August 24th. preorder. Samsung’s US web store the price is listed as $3,500. That would be significantly more than previously speculated: at the end of June, the rumor mill was still talking about 2,200 euros. Depending on the situation with the exchange rate and VAT, a good 60 percent higher price is to be feared – but the German side has not yet given a price in euros.

Odyssey Ark: Key Specifications

There are now some new details about the technical data – the Odyssey Ark was presented for the first time at the CES in January 2022. With its 55 inches, the Odyssey Ark is not only the currently largest curved display (1000R) in the Samsung line-up, but can also be operated in portrait format. With the height-adjustable stand, the display can be rotated and should be used for more multitasking and setting up multiple windows. The display can also be divided into several smaller windows via a multi-view option.

The 55-inch display has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and UHD resolution. The VA panel works with Quantum Dot Mini-LEDs, the refresh rate is 165 Hertz according to the data sheet, while the minimum brightness is 420 cd/㎡, the typical 600 cd/m² and the typical maximum 1,000 cd/m². According to Samsung, 16,384 different shades of black should be possible with the newly developed 14-bit LED control. This should enable “fine dark shades in the game”. Samsung specifies the static contrast ratio as 1,000,000:1. AMD’s Freesync Premium Pro and HDR 10+ are on board – and of course 1 ms response time (GtG).

The Odyssey Ark uses a matte display surface that is supposed to protect against glare and reflections. In addition, the “Sound Dome Technology” should offer an “impressive” surround sound experience with an AI Sound Booster and Dolby Atmos. A loudspeaker in each corner of the screen and two central woofers should ensure a realistic sound. According to Samsung, the 60-watt 2.2.2 system is capable of deep bass tones up to a frequency of 45 Hz. The recently introduced gaming hub is also supported. It is connected via HDMI 2.1, but according to the data sheet not via DisplayPort.

The scope of delivery also includes a wireless wheel controller, which can be used to adjust the lighting and the interface, among other things. Samsung calls the controller Ark Dial, which is solar-powered (optionally also chargeable via USB-C) and was developed exclusively for Odyssey Ark. Among other things, the screen size can be freely selected between 27 and 55 inches. The position and screen ratio can also be configured between 16:9, 21:9 and 32:9, both horizontally and vertically.

With “Multi View” the Odyssey Ark shows up to four different screen contents next to each other in horizontal mode. In vertical cockpit mode, up to three screen windows are possible one above the other. How this works in practice shows a hands-on test by The Verge. Fps, HDR and VRR can be displayed or set directly via the game bar – the screen ratio, reaction time and game image mode can also be changed directly with the Ark Dial.
