Resourceful hobbyists didn’t miss it after the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PC to dig through the data of the game for hidden functions. They discovered evidence of a prototype for a multiplayer mode.

Cooperative and also competitive multiplayer are indicated

The modder DnieweTamp dug into the data for the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man released on July 12 and found lines of code dealing with a possible multiplayer mode.

According to the modder, a multiplayer prototype is primarily mentioned, in which there is talk of a “red” and a “blue” team. A competition between Peter Parker and Miles Morales is also conjured up. Message texts are even stored for this, which indicate which of the two Spider-Man characters is the better – but what is not clear.

Miles Morales in the first Spider-Man? The lines of code are particularly explosive when they mention a character model by Miles Morales, which is created in the “Multiplayer” category. However, the character only appears in the spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales, of which a PC version will also appear in the fall.

In the sales versions of PC games or even in their updates, notes on ongoing projects or even upcoming releases by the developers are often hidden in the program code. These notes mostly relate to further developments of the technical framework, but also show planned and discarded features.

It is therefore quite conceivable that Insomniac is actively working on a multiplayer mode for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Conversely, it can also be the case that the prototype mentioned is just an experiment that was not pursued further.

However, the release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PC in the fall could provide more clarity. Perhaps there will be more hints of a potential co-op or PvP mode.
