Countless mods for popular games can be found on the NexusMods site. There is currently a discussion about a decision by the moderation team: a mod was deleted and the modder was banned. The controversial mod removed “Pride” flags from Spiderman Remastered and replaced them with US flags. The team stands behind this decision and takes a clear position.

What kind of mod is it?

  • There are individual “Pride” flags in the Spider-Man Remastered game. These flags symbolize support for the LGBTQ+ community.
  • A mod replaced those few in-game Pride flags with the flag of the USA, which also exist in Spiderman Remastered.

Mod deleted, modder banned, modder’s main account also banned

How did the moderators react?

  • Nexusmods moderators have deleted this mod.
  • They banned the modder who uploaded them.
  • And then concluded: That was just a secondary account that was created for trolling, so the moderators also permanently banned the modder’s main account.

That’s why the ban came: A spokesman for the site, DarkOne, says: The ban only came about because the modder created a second account, “Mike Hawk”, just to upload this mod:

It was very clear that he did it on purpose […] The fact that the user created a faggot account like a coward specifically to upload the mod shows his intent to troll with it, knowing we wouldn’t allow it.

DarkOne says: If the person had uploaded the mod under his real account, the mod would have been deleted, but the user would only have been warned. But the second account had to be banned.

New multiplayer mod for Skyrim fulfills the coop dream of thousands of RPG fans – you need Steam

Why did you delete the mod at all?

Our stance is: we are for inclusivity, we are for diversity. If we think someone is uploading a mod to our site with the intention of explicitly opposing inclusivity and diversity, we will take action.

If this bothers you, please delete your account

This is what the moderators say: One becomes clear:

We don’t want to argue with you about this. We have stated our point of view and will not provide a platform to disrupt our position in order to build an irrational and paranoid narrative. You can do that somewhere else where we don’t care.

If this attitude angers you, if we as a company have broken any code of ethics and you cannot accept that, then we ask that you delete your account and just move on – as we do.

The biggest topic in both gaming reddits – But discussed very differently

How is the discussion about this? This differs greatly depending on where you look. The topic NexusMods is on 18.08. the biggest topic on both major English-language gaming reddits, but it’s discussed differently:

In the “Games” subreddit, the votes are positive. The company “NexusMods” is given its respect for taking such a clear position. The statement is well thought out and clearly formulated, say many users of the gaming forum, where press articles and videos about games are often discussed.

In the “Gaming” subreddit, the discussion had to be closed because there were too many comments that broke the rules. Here the discussion is more in the direction that there are certainly worse mods. It’s just a PR gimmick. The mods would only have given in to pressure from outside, they would be going down a very dangerous path. In general, people would get too upset about something like that.

LGBTQ+ and gaming is also an important but sensitive topic for game companies:

LoL proudly celebrates gays and lesbians – Except in Turkey, you’re not allowed there: LGBTQIA+ issues
