DJI Mavic 3: C1 certification gives users more freedom in drone flight

from Sarah Petzold
DJI was the first manufacturer in Germany to receive C1 certification for the Mavic 3 in accordance with the European drone regulation. As a result, users can now fly the Mavic 3 in permitted areas without an A2 test, provided they have the appropriate update.

If you want to fly a drone in this country, you have to live with some restrictions. This is partly due to the new EU drone regulation, which requires aircraft to be certified according to the CE standard. Until now, no manufacturer had received such a certification for one of its drones – but that is now changing. Because DJI has now received a C1 certification from TÜV Rheinland for its in-house model Mavic 3.

Drone flight soon possible without A2 exam

So owners of a Mavic 3 drone have reason to be happy, because they can now fly the device in the A1 category without an A2 “Remote Piloting License” exam. This class includes drones weighing up to 900 grams, which may be flown in the vicinity of bystanders. The A1 or “small” drone license will be required to fly these drones from 2024 onwards.

For a drone to receive C1 certification, it must meet the following conditions:

  • maximum noise level of 83db
  • Active Track Intelligent Flight Mode for filming people or objects is only activated at a maximum distance of 50 meters from the person/object
  • Auxiliary LEDs turn on and off automatically
  • front LEDs will flash by default while the drone is in operation

Users wishing to apply for a Mavic 3 C1 standard label can do so directly from DJI free of charge starting in Q4 2022. The prerequisite is an update of the drone to the new firmware. In addition, the serial number of the drone must be specified.
