Ryzen 7000: Alphacool ready for socket AM5 everywhere

from Valentin Sattler
Before the release of AMD’s new Ryzen 7000 processors, the water cooling manufacturer Alphacool confirmed that AM4 products can also be used on AM5. A conversion kit is not necessary for this.

With the approaching release of the Ryzen 7000 processors, AMD is facing several changes. With the Raphael CPUs there is not only a new CPU architecture and production, but also a completely new platform with AM5. This will not only support PCI Express 5.0 and DDR5, but will also make some changes to the socket itself. With AM5, AMD will switch from a PGA to an LGA socket for the first time in the private customer segment. On top of that, the heat spreader will also be revised: it will have several indentations on the side of the Ryzen 7000 CPUs.

Alphacool promises cooler support

The aforementioned changes to the socket and heat spreader could also result in massive changes for CPU coolers, but AMD apparently wants to largely retain the previous specifications. In line with this, the company Alphacool, known for its (compact) water cooling systems, has now announced that all of the company’s CPU coolers that are suitable for AM4 can also be used for AM5 processors.

“Just in time for the start of sales in September 2022, we can announce that all CPU coolers and all-in-one solutions in the Alphacool product range are compatible with AMD’s AM5 socket. The required mounting material is included with all coolers and AIOs and enables that the new Ryzen 7000 series processors can be water-cooled with Alphacool products right from the start.”

The company says that the mounting material for the AM5 socket is already included with all current (compact) water cooling systems from Alphacool. In practice, this should probably mean that all water coolers are installed in exactly the same way as with the AM4 socket. If you already own a corresponding product, you don’t have to worry about a CPU upgrade.

While the mechanical compatibility with Alphacool coolers is maintained, it remains to be seen to what extent the cooling properties will change as a result of the new heat spreader and the more modern chips. If the Ryzen 7000 processors place special demands on the coolers used, corresponding analyzes that address the issue should appear quickly after the release in September.
