Today, August 23, 2022, Immortal Empires is coming – the big DLC for Total War: Warhammer 3 that everyone has been waiting for. With that, the best strategy game of 2022 is finally complete and a real feast for multiplayer fans, whether in PvP or cooperative.

What kind of game is this? Total War: Warhammer 3 is a strategy game and the last part of the Warhammer trilogy. You control different peoples of the Warhammer universe, build cities and lead armies in the fight for power and dominance.

Today, August 23rd, Immortal Empires is a free DLC that will more than triple the size of the game. Many fans of the series have been waiting for this moment since release.

What makes Immortal Empires so important? Total War: Warhammer 3 was released in February 2022, but more or less incomplete. Only with the Immortal Empires is it actually complete.

This is a new campaign that combines the maps and races of all three Warhammer games in the Total War series. Due to the sheer scale of the game, a single lap here can take dozens of hours before anyone even comes close to winning.

The Immortal Empires are pretty much what the Warhammer trilogy has been working toward for years. And anyone interested in Warhammer, Total War or strategy games should definitely take a look here.

Immortal Empires: Strategy Game features 287 factions and a huge campaign

How do I even play Total War? The Total War series is one of the most well-known strategy game greats. It combines the two genres of turn-based and real-time strategy:

  • Campaign map: You conquer cities, construct buildings, research and train troops in rounds. When all players have completed their turn, the AI’s moves are calculated and the game continues.
  • Battlefield: If you decide to fight yourself and not let the result be calculated, you will lead your armies into the field in huge real-time battles.

In the multiplayer campaign in Warhammer 3 you play simultaneously. That means you don’t take turns in the rounds, but act at the same time – one of the most important changes compared to the predecessor. You then finish the rounds together. This shortens waiting times, which is particularly useful because Warhammer 3 is the first Total War to support up to 8 players in multiplayer.

Like Total War itself, you can play Immortal Empires cooperatively or competitively with other players. Depending on how far apart you are on the map, wars or alliances are unlikely or even necessary for your expansion and victory.

This is in Immortal Empires: Basically, the DLC “only” brings the opportunity to play the old parts of the Warhammer series in the new Total War. However, this has a few things that come with it:

  • all races from Warhammer 1 and Warhammer 2 are playable
  • the map is significantly larger and now encompasses the entire world of the Warhammer series
  • A total of over 287 factions can be found and fight against each other in the balance of power

The new campaign is a pure domination campaign. So you have no other goals than to capture or demolish a certain number of cities and raise armies. It’s like a “sandbox” mode.

If you’ve already played Warhammer 3 or its predecessors, you may notice changes such as new starting positions for some rulers. You can read more about the Immortal Empires in the detailed test at the GameStar.

You can see the entire map here in the trailer:

Play Immortal Empires – you need that

Basically, Immortal Empires is free. You can play the new campaign if you own Total War: Warhammer 3 and its two predecessors. However, you only have access to those races and commanders whose base game and DLC you have activated on the same platform.

For example, if you want to play the Skaven, you must own all 3 Warhammer games on the same platform – for example Steam.

If you are playing Warhammer 3 through Xbox Game Pass, you will not have access to the other Warhammer games and DLCs purchased on Steam or the Epic Games Store. In this case you have to activate Warhammer 3 again in the shop where you own the other Warhammer parts.

The predecessor parts will also appear in the Microsoft Store at a later date, but it is still unclear when that will happen. Only then will the Immortal Empires also be available for the Game Pass. A barrier-free solution is to be worked on, but it is still unclear whether and when that will come.

Along with the Immortal Empires comes the new Champions of Chaos DLC. This brings 4 more playable commanders for the chaos factions into play. These even have special mechanics in which they let their empire be managed by vassals.

However, the DLC is chargeable and must be purchased separately, as well as the DLCs of the predecessors if you do not already own them.

We’ve included the trailer for the new Tzeentch commander, Vilitch, here for you:

The most disappointing aspect of Total War: Warhammer 3 suddenly looks a lot more interesting

The best strategy game of 2022 according to Metacritic

Who is Immortal Empires worth for? Anyone who already owns Total War: Warhammer 3 should definitely check out Immortal Empires – especially if you already own the previous ones. Most of you should be eagerly waiting for the release anyway.

Total War is primarily aimed at fans of strategy games. The Warhammer series also brings a fantasy aspect into play that can even inspire role-playing players. If you’re even a bit strategy-savvy, you should at least watch Immortal Empires.

If you’re new to the game, the best way to check out the base game is through Xbox Game Pass. This saves you money and you can first get an idea of whether the game suits you.

Due to the large franchise behind the game, you should also take a look at the series if you are a Warhammer fan. Seeing well-known characters like Karl Franz, Ikit Krallenhand and the champions of Khorne, Slaneesh and Co. in action can be quite exciting for fans.

There is a huge world behind Warhammer, which you can get to know in more detail through Total War, wiki entries and more:

In a perfect world, the biggest MMORPG today would be World of Warhammer

I’ve been waiting for this all year

Even though I usually work on other topics on MeinMMO, I love real-time strategy. That’s exactly why I never really liked Total War – it was too slow and sluggish for me.

But when friends forced me to try Warhammer 3 – it’s in Game Pass – I absolutely fell in love with the game and sunk hundreds of hours into it even before Immortal Empires. Then I even caught up on the old parts and played just as much.

I’ve been waiting for this DLC since the release of Total War: Warhammer 3 and I already know that I’ll be putting several hundred hours into the game. Simply because my favorite faction, the Skaven, are now finally playable with the new mechanics like quick trade and – most importantly for me – with more than just one other player.

I haven’t been able to try Immortal Empires yet, but the version of the predecessors shows that it’s going to be huge. Strategy games with these gigantic proportions, in which a match likes to last several hours, are just right for a whole gaming weekend and more.

And that’s exactly what I’ll be using Immortal Empires for the rest of 2022 and certainly 2023 as well. As a fan of the Warhamer franchise, the update is just what I need to keep sinking into this brutal fantasy world.
