At Gamescom 2022 we were able to see the strategy-survival mix War Hospital. With a little fine-tuning, the game could become a real insider tip.

Cologne, Germany – Gamescom 2022 has opened its doors and many developers are tempting with fresh information about upcoming games. With War Hospital, we discovered an exciting title that we took a closer look at. And we have not regretted it. If you like survival and strategy, you could definitely expect a promising insider tip in the coming year.

War Hospital: You decide who lives and who dies – and the decision is difficult

What is War Hospital? In principle, War Hospital is a mix of real-time strategy (RTS) and survival management with sometimes difficult and unpleasant moral decisions at the center. The game offers a story driven campaign with different endings. The title is scheduled to be released on Steam in the first quarter of 2023.

What’s the matter? In short: You slip into the role of the British Major Henry Wells and at the end of the First World War you have to expand and run a field hospital right at the front.

Included

  • you organize the evacuation of the wounded from the front in order to save the lives of as many soldiers as possible
  • you have to constantly develop and improve the medical infrastructure
  • you have to make hard moral decisions – under constant time pressure and lack of medical supplies
  • you have to maintain the defense of the front from the Germans with available and healed soldiers
  • you have to manage resources, staff (in different roles).

So you not only manage the field hospital, but also some of what is happening on and around the front.

How to play: The gameplay loop looks (roughly) as follows: In principle, soldiers are constantly being brought to the hospital, which you can develop further with equipment and building upgrades, thereby unlocking further gameplay elements that give you more options when dealing with the rather complex task that Making life easier – for example in the form of certain specialists (units).

You also collect additional resources with special units, solve quests and keep morale up. Because if this drops to zero or you don’t have enough soldiers to hold the front, the game is lost. The aim is namely to hold the front against the Germans until the end of the war.

In order to successfully fulfill this task, more and more micro-management is required. For example, you have to assign patients to surgeons in the optimal order. You have to constantly decide who lives and who dies, and sometimes the decisions are not really morally correct.

Do I save a general’s son at the cost of 5 other good soldiers dying, but earn the father’s favor in the form of additional bonuses? Do I let my surgeons rest longer and work better in return, although in return not all can be operated on in time? Or do I let the doctor burn out but can hold the line for the moment? Do I need more drivers for the transport or more staff at the cemetery so that the plague doesn’t break out? There are many paths to success, it all depends on you and your morality.

Conclusion: There’s a lot more to War Hospital than meets the eye. There are numerous mechanics that you unlock more and more of, and they all work together in a meaningful way, so that you always have to consider more and more factors if you want to be successful. The general gameplay loop is fun for strategists and quickly pulls you in. You have to make difficult decisions at every turn – not only in terms of planning, but also on an emotional level.

What is still lacking at the moment is a good tutorial that really explains all the critical areas of the game sufficiently and in some places there is still a lack of fine-tuning (e.g. with the animations of the units). But the developers are already working on the title’s problem areas and if improvements are made in the right places before the release, the game could well become an insider tip for strategy and survival fans. If these genres are your thing then War Hospital is definitely one to keep an eye on.
