WoW WotLK Classic: Merciless Tracker Mega Guide
With the introduction of the so-called player achievements in the second expansion Wrath of the Lich King Classic, as in 2008, almost all players will be on the hunt for them again, especially those where you can get nice rewards like one of the exclusive proto-drakes -Can dust off flying mounts. There are also non-reward achievements that are awe-inspiring just by their title, and the one featured in this article Merciless Tracker (English: Frostbite) is one of those. Should you ever meet someone with this title, you may take off your helm, because he or she has managed to locate and hunt down every rare creature in Northrend!
The Merciless Tracker builds on success exposure in the north or, more precisely, you must instead only use one of the rare creatures listed there Everyone shoot. At the time of Patch 3.0.8, there are 23 spread across the continent. This includes – to the chagrin of the hunter players – the extremely rare exotic cat Loque’nahak, which we have already introduced to you in this guide, as well as the pretty bird of prey Aotona, which can be tamed from patch 3.1. That doesn’t include the Time-Lost Proto-Drake, which is so extremely rare as a random spawn of the rare blue dragon Vyragosa that it’s quite out of the ordinary. That said, this primeval dragon, or epic flying mount of the same name that it drops, is of course the pinnacle of any ruthless tracker’s career!
We have embarked on a long search for the rare Northrend residents and are happy to be able to present them all in pictures. In the following guide, broken down by region, you’ll find a brief description, a map of locations, and what loot you can expect for each one, from Aotona to the Zul’Drak Sentinel. The latter always consists of one Abandoned adventurer’s satchel with about 20 gold pieces, 20x Frost Cloth and occasionally some crystallized elements, as well as a unique, rare item with good stats, such as the Corroded face shield by Hochthan Jorfus. Before we begin, an explanation of what a rare creature is in World of Warcraft and a few tips on finding it.
What is a “rare creature” in WoW?
In WotLK Classic there is a special kind of mobs or NPCs, which are characterized by their rare occurrence and a special naming. These are also easily recognizable by the noble silver frame (not gold!) around their character portrait and the elite status, ie they have more hit points than ordinary mobs and dish out more powerfully, although sometimes not as hard as the standard elite mobs.
These rare (or rare) enemies carry better loot and therefore take a long time to respawn after they die. The so-called (Re)Spawn timer varies for the mobs – common are about 6 to 12 hours until they come back and follow their predetermined path again. Some players suspect that some of them – the “very rare” ones – even despawn after a time of 10 to 15 minutes. However, this is not proven. Also not proven in this context is the assumption that a maximum of two of the possible rare mobs can appear on a continent like Northrend at the same time.

In each of the eight main regions of Northrend (excluding Dalaran, Crystalsong Forest and the PvP area of Wintergrasp) there are currently three rare mobs on the move with one exception. There are only two of these rare mobs in the Storm Peaks, the blue dragon Vyragosa and the mechagnome Dirkee. The third in the league – the aforementioned Time-Lost Proto-Dragon – falls out of line here, as it shares spawn points, spawn times and flight paths with Vyragosa. Each time Vyragosa is killed, there is a small chance that the Time-Lost Proto-Drake will spawn in her place at the next respawn and then follow her path. So the Time-Lost Proto-Drake is sort of the rare spawn of a rare mob.
Although – with the exception of the time-lost proto-drake – all rare mobs theoretically appear the same number of times, in practice the search varies in difficulty. For example, all mobs in the end regions (Sholazar Basin, Storm Peaks, Icecrown) are usually difficult to discover, since many players romp here during their daily quests or to collect high-quality herbs, ores, etc. The aforementioned exotic cat Loque’nahak in the Sholazar Basin is extremely rare as it is also a sought-after hunter’s companion. It should probably be number 2 in the list of very rare creatures after the time-lost proto-drake. Mobs that reside in low-level areas with low quest density are easier to spot. An example of this is the Scarlet Highlord Daion in the Dragonblight.
As a rule, each of the following mobs can be soloed, despite the elite label, for each class with reasonably acceptable equipment, provided you are at the same character level. So if you run into one or the other while leveling or questing in Northrend, take them with you if you can. The only exception is the level 80 giant Putridus the Ancient in Icecrown. Not only does it hit the target properly, it also has both a stun and a knockback ability, which in combination can cause serious problems for some classes or skills. You may have to find a partner here. Otherwise, ideally you have already reached character level 80 and have a fast flying mount (280% or more speed) and the cold-weather flying license for Northrend. This is the fastest and safest way to go.

The use of one is recommended for the targeted search for the rare mobs search macros, because not everyone is immediately visible like the above-mentioned giant Putridus, and whoever “tags” the mob first (by causing damage) also gets the loot and the credit for killing it. Below you will find the German and the English “Target” list, depending on which language version of WoW you are using. It contains all 23 rare mobs and the time-lost proto-drake, which of course you don’t want to miss when searching.
When creating the macro, you simply copy this search list to a button, which you then drag onto the ‘1’ button at the bottom left of your action bar. Now when combing through the areas, keep pressing your ‘1’ key every few seconds. If the target is within range, it will automatically appear in the sight and you only have to determine the exact location.

Unfortunately, the macros only allow max. 255 characters too, which is why some names or search terms have to be greatly shortened. Of course, there can be overlaps and instead of the mob you might have a player with a similar name in your sights. In this case, simply deselect the wrong destination again and again and continue as usual. Over time, your list will get shorter anyway, so you can delete some mobs and fill in others with their full names.
