The online mail order company Amazon is probably about to buy the publisher Electronic Arts. This reports the portal “USAToday“, citing anonymous sources from GLHF. Industry insider Geoff Keighley, who is also currently hosting Gamescom 2022, also shared the information on his Twitter channel.

According to speculation, the deal will be announced later today. Rumors about the sale of Electronic Arts have been circulating for the past few weeks – in addition to Amazon, Apple and Disney have also been named as possible buyers.

With the purchase of EA, Amazon would further advance its development in the gaming market – after all, FIFA, Battlefield, Apex Legends, the Star Wars series and dozens of other popular games franchises are among the games distributed by Electronic Arts. With the acquisition of Twitch in 2014, Amazon has already bought one of the largest players in the games market and, in conjunction with a paid Prime membership, offers loot boxes for various games in addition to free video games.

EA’s Amazon acquisition could be seen as a response to Microsoft’s January 2022 purchase of Activision Blizzard for just under $69 billion. How much the online mail order company Electronic Arts can cost is not yet known. Possible consequences with regard to the “EA Play” subscription model, which is also included in the Game Pass Ultimate distributed by Microsoft, are not yet clear.

Film adaptations of franchises such as Mass Effect or Dead Space for Amazon Prime Video are also conceivable, as streaming competitor Netflix has successfully produced for “The Witcher” or “League of Legends: Arcane”, for example. It remains to be seen to what extent the rumors and consequences will be confirmed – neither Amazon nor EA have made any concrete statements so far, but an official statement should be made later today.
