Samsung Odyssey OLED G8: QD OLED monitor is coming in the Q4

from Andrew Link
The Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 is coming in the fourth quarter. It relies on the 34-inch QD-OLED panel from Samsung Display, which Dell already installs in one of the Alienware monitors.

After third-party providers have already presented the first monitors with Samsung’s QD-OLED panel, the South Korean group is now following suit with its own model. This is marketed as the Odyssey OLED G8 and on paper has the same technical specifications for the panel as the devices already presented. The 34-inch display is curved with a radius of 1.8 meters (1800R) and offers an aspect ratio of 21:9. The UWQHD resolution results in 3,440 x 1,440 pixels that are refreshed at up to 175 Hertz. A certificate for DisplayHDR 400 True Black is available for the brightness. Neither Samsung nor LG gives exact technical data for its new model – trade fair announcements like here at the IFA usually lack some depth.

Micro HDMI 2.1 and Mini Display Port 1.4 as well as USB Type-C are mentioned. The monitor also has two 5-watt stereo speakers for admittedly primarily makeshift sound reinforcement. The base offers height adjustment, the monitor can be tilted and, as is usual with the Odyssey models, there is colorful lighting with an Ambilight-like function (Samsung calls it Core Sync & Core Lighting Plus) and an unusual design.

Samsung has given the Odyssey OLED G8 a smart hub so that users can use various apps directly. Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Youtube are the usual suspects, but there’s also Xbox Game Pass, Geforce NOW, and Google Stadia, allowing you to even use the monitor without a player simply by using OTT services. Samsung and Microsoft recently announced a collaboration. There is a matching remote control.

No prices were mentioned, availability should be from the fourth quarter of 2022 in selected markets. The Dell Alienware AW3423DW costs 1,300 euros, if you can get one. Samsung should also have this in mind for its own model. Competitors come from LG with the LX3 and the 45GR95QE, both of which have much larger screen diagonals.
