Finally! Assassin’s Creed is actually sending us to Japan with Project Red

We got our first glimpse of the Japan setting.

The day that countless Assassin’s Creed fans – including many GamePro readers – have been waiting for has arrived. Assassin’s Creed is coming in feudal Japan. Ubisoft officially announced the game, previously called Codename Red, with a first teaser at Ubisoft Forward.

Sexism issues at Ubisoft: The French developer and publisher has been accused of a toxic corporate culture since July 2020. These include far-reaching sexism problems, misogyny and discrimination, which are said to be deeply rooted in the company. Although Ubisoft has already drawn conclusions, for example by exchanging management staff and openly commenting on the allegations, many employees feel that these measures are not sufficient within the company.

Assassin’s Creed Red aims to fulfill “Shinobi Fantasy”.

The various leaks were right: it’s actually an Assassin’s Creed, codenamed Red in Mache, set in Japan. More specifically in feudal (medieval) Japan, which includes samurai and ninjas (shinobis). In the first teaser trailer, we already get to see an assassin waiting for his victim on the roof like a shinobi with a sword and a hidden blade:

It wasn’t said whether we’re playing a female or male assassin, even if the character in the trailer looks more female in our opinion.

What is certain, however, is that Assassin’s Creed Red as Open World RPG based on Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla. The classic gameplay that we can expect in an Assassin’s Creed Mirage will probably not exist in Red.

AC Red joins Infinity

What also came up in the leaks: Project Red, i.e. AC Red, could become part of Assassin’s Creed Infinity. Since not that much is known about Infinity, this statement did suggest that Red is not a full-fledged offshoot at all, but just something smaller, such as a quest line.

But we can give the all-clear: Assassin’s Creed Red will be part of this hub, but will be a “next premium flagship title”. So we can expect a standalone game on the scale of AC Valhalla that we can either play exclusively or additionally via Infinity.

Incidentally, when the time will come was not revealed in the Steam. Ubisoft was also silent about the platforms. It was announced that Assassin’s Creed Red will be developed by Ubisoft Québec, who are also responsible for AC Odyssey. Jonathan Dumont is the creative director of the project. He and his team are thus faced with the challenge of taking on the open world hit Ghost of Tsushima, as the comparison here is inevitable.

There was a lot more Assassin’s Creed at the Ubisoft Forward event

Assassin’s Creed Red was far from the only announcement at Ubisoft Forward. In addition to the first correct information about AC Mirage, Assassin’s Creed Jade and Assassin’s Creed Hexe were also announced. You can read all about that and more in our show overview article.

What do you think of AC Red? Are you looking forward to it?
