Intel Arc GPUs: Rumors about discontinuation denied again

from Yusuf Hatic
In the past few days, there has been repeated speculation on social media about a cessation of work on the Intel Arc graphics cards. Intel again firmly rejected the rumours.

With the official presentation of the Arc Alchemist graphics cards, the anticipated launch of the Intel desktop GPUs is just around the corner – but before that there were some rumors about a possible cessation of production. Like on the YouTube channel, among others Moore’s Law is Dead citing internal leaks, Intel is chasing the original release schedule. A global release of four desktop graphics cards – which are probably the A380, A580, A750 and A770 that have now been shown – was actually planned for the end of July. The ongoing problems and the dissatisfaction of Intel bosses, as depicted in the leak, sparked rumors that the company could scrap all graphics card development immediately after the launch of the Alchemist series.

Raja Koduri, in his capacity as Intel’s senior vice president, countered these speculations in a tweet and expressed his astonishment. The rumors of a possible end to graphics card development would not help either the hard-working team behind GPUs or the PC community in general. According to Koduri, Alchemist is the first generation of Intel graphics cards and thus implies the expected teething problems that Intel had to deal with. However, as Koduri admitted at the same time, Intel had to struggle with more problems than originally thought, but remained stubborn.

These problems included some bugs in the graphics driver. For example, 43 bugs were only discovered in the Intel Arc driver based on a YouTube review, most of which are said to have been fixed in the meantime. The original tweet by Koduri, which triggered the denial in the first place, shows that Intel is not being deterred by the difficulties before the release of the graphics cards: In a test laboratory in Toronto, the Intel Vice President shows a reference model of the Alchemist GPUs, which “are suitable for the ready for launch”.
