Call of Duty Bans 500,000 Accounts for Toxic Behavior – Brings new rules of conduct ahead of MW2 beta

There are a few dark corners in the Call of Duty community. Aggressive players without respect or restraint rampage through the chats, insulting friend and foe alike. But CoD is taking more and more action, banning massive amounts of accounts, demanding name changes and showing 3 new rules of conduct.

Call of Duty has always been a phenomenon in gaming. In recent years, however, the most successful shooter franchise has upped the ante and gained many millions of players. However, with this comes a great responsibility.

The CoD community does not have a good reputation. Most players are well behaved, fair, helpful and unobtrusive. But as is so often the case, there is a small minority that causes trouble.

Racism, bullying, intolerance – if you play with an active in-game chat, you will unfortunately come into contact with such things sooner or later.

Call of Duty is clearly against such behavior, shows its progress in the fight against the toxic minority in a recent blog post and introduces new rules that all players must confirm – shortly before the start of the CoD MW2 beta.

What progress are the developers reporting? Call of Duty has already banned hundreds of thousands of misbehaving accounts. Also, players with offensive names will be forced to change them. The payment:

  • 500,000 accounts banned for toxic behavior
  • 300,000 accounts had to change their names

Since the last report on toxic players, 150,000 accounts have been banned in almost 1.5 years.

At that time, it was also announced that voice chat would be analyzed more intensively in order to identify toxic behavior. This system also includes in-game name creation and text chat. The filter system now includes 14 languages.

  • English
  • French
  • Italian
  • Portuguese
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Russian
  • Polish
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Traditionally Chinese
  • Chinese – Simplified
  • Turkish
  • Arabic

What new rules are there? In order to give players clear and simple guidelines on how to behave correctly in the game, there is a new “Code of Conduct” – a code of conduct consisting of 3 parts:

  • Treat everyone with respect
  • Compete with Integrity
  • stay alert

Basically, it’s about being sensible towards other players, not cheating, and reporting violations of the first two rules to CoD. The full English Blog post can be found on callofduty.com.

Call of Duty has grown steadily and still has a lot of potential. They want to make players feel more comfortable and take care of each other despite the competitive environment.

Do you think CoD is doing enough to address toxic behavior in its games? Is there anything specific you wish for? Leave a comment with your assessment.
