Metal Hellsinger has won the coveted Most Wanted PC Game award at this year’s Gamescom. The game’s demo has been downloaded over a million times. The developers of the still young studio The Outsiders – who of course come from Sweden, which is traditionally burdened with heavy metal – are already celebrating properly both themselves and their many freshly minted fans in view of the success, which was probably a bit surprising for them too.
Metal Hellsinger is based on the current Unity engine – not exactly a common choice for first-person shooters. Although there are some Unity titles with a first-person perspective that also offer quite chic graphics, including the survival adventure Subnautica, the pretty jungle hell Green Hell, the weird Pathologic 2 or the dark coop sneaking GTFO, it qualifies none of these titles as fast-paced first-person shooters. Other contributions, such as Call of Duty Mobile or the port of the original 1993 Doom for the Nintendo Switch, fall a little short for other reasons. However, this does not have to mean that the Unity Engine is not particularly suitable for shooters or that it is technically backward, just that the studios mostly choose the popular Unreal Engine 4.
The heavy-metal action festival should of course appeal to metal heads in particular, after all the background music is strongly interwoven with the gameplay. But the rhythmic hunt for demons also has high qualities apart from the grandiose soundtrack. The graphic implementation with the current Unity engine is impressive, the design is appealing, the levels and their backgrounds are designed with obvious dedication. In general, you can tell from the title that heart and soul went into the development – and that’s why the demon hunt conjured up is so entertaining.
