A bug-infested Windows NT and a catastrophe not only for the PC market (PCGH-Retro, September 21)

from Henner Schroeder
Windows NT and a catastrophe not only for the PC market – that happened on September 21st. Every day, PC Games Hardware takes a look back at the young but eventful history of the computer.

…1994: Microsoft’s new operating system series, which manages without the legacy of the DOS era, reaches a new milestone: On September 21, 1994, Windows NT 3.5 comes onto the market, which is visually based on Windows for Workgroups 3.xx. Although NT 3.5 is faster than the previous version 3.1, it contains many flaws that can lead to severe data loss, among other things; also, the system will not install on machines with CPUs newer than the first Pentium (there is one on the Microsoft website official list of confirmed bugs in Windows NT 3.5). It only takes nine months until the successor, Windows NT 3.51, comes onto the market.

…1999: On September 21, 1999, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the island nation of Taiwan. 2,200 people are killed. The factories of major manufacturers of PC components are damaged or even destroyed, and production is stopped in many places for several weeks. Some of the consequences are price increases, for example for LC displays and RAM – even if the hardware shortage is not as severe as feared.
