Babylon’s Fall: A Trash Compactor Case at Gamestop?
In March of this year, a game for the PC as well as the Playstation 4 and 5 came onto the market, in which the player was actually full of expectations beforehand. Not least because Platinum Games went to work together with the publisher Square Enix. For reference, there are games like Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier Automata on the one hand, and many games from the Final Fantasy, Deus Ex, Hitman, Tomb Raider and more series on the other. We’re talking about Babylon*s Fall, an online game with a mix of hack’n’slay, role-playing and cooperative multiplayer gaming with lots of live service. But the game was disappointing all the way – the sales figures are so bad that even retail copies of the game are apparently simply being thrown away. This is suggested by a tweet at Gamestop saying that Babylon’s fall appears to be a trash compactor case becomes. Also Reddit is discussing this news.
The Fall of Babylon’s Fall
The announcement of Gamestop’s disposal of Babylon’s Fall doesn’t seem far-fetched at all. Because Steam also has Babylon’s Fall (buy now €50.99) already removed from the shop, probably also because nobody buys it and then starves to death looking for fellow players. According to Steam, even in the summer there were rarely more than 10 to 15 players in the PC version, and in June there was even a completely empty game world to admireunless you count yourself as being present.
The fact that the game would be anything but a success also made sense our test with a rating of just 5/10 points guess. The game is not completely catastrophic, but precisely because such a title also depends on the community and the first buyers were already enormously dissatisfied, no significant player community built up at all. On top of that, there wasn’t a lot of marketing for the game.
All in all, the failure is somewhat reminiscent of the Spielberg blockbuster game ET The Extra-Terrestrial, although there were different reasons for the flop back then. Because the video game was not only bad, but also completely bugged and therefore not playable with the best will in the world. The main reason for this was that the producers really wanted to take advantage of the Christmas business and only gave the programmers a few weeks of development time. It was said at the time that a number of specimens had been buried in a landfill, which was only a legend for a long time –in 2014, however, many buried copies of the game were discovered in a landfill. And many a developer of Babylon’s Fall certainly wants nothing more than what ET wanted to do: phone home.
