Squid Game: Third Season? With Leonardo DiCaprio?! Possible!
Actually, the Netflix series Squid Game should be completed after the first and only season – so it made sense from the maker Hwang Dong-hyuk. However, the groundbreaking success has spawned a second season, and Hwang is even toying with the idea of a third season that could bring international stars into the games. And one of them could be Leonardo DiCaprio.
Korean Netflix production Squid Game recently scooped six Emmys, and as part of that, there was a press conference with show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. As part of this, he came out with some interesting details for fans of the evil and pitch-black show (via deadline) that took Netflix viewers by storm in 2021.
Hwang Dong-hyuk is currently writing the script for the second season of Squid Game and has already chosen which games would be “played” this time. “I would ask you not to write articles about the games, because the audience needs to feel the excitement and thrill of what’s to come,” he added jokingly. Accordingly, Hwang could not elicit any indication of which games it could be. However, he said that Netflix officials have increased the series budget for season 2. This should also be reflected in the quality of the sets.

What Hwang Dong-hyuk also hinted at is that there are many fans of the series in Hollywood – and one of them is Leonardo DiCaprio. You wouldn’t feel much of such a fan honor in the second season because it will be set in Korea again. But if a third season were to be approved, it would look different, according to the showmaker. Because it doesn’t necessarily have to play in Korea, and that opens the floodgates for Hollywood fans of Squid Game. And so does Leonardo DiCaprio, who has said several times in the past that he’s a big fan of the show.
“If time and chances allow, maybe we should ask him to play,” said Hwang. “We’ve joked about it before.” Basically, of course, the question arises as to how much Squid Game could still come after the series has actually already been “finished”. A change of location for a third season would probably allow for many other “games”. First, however, work is being done on the second season, which is scheduled to be broadcast on Netflix in 2024.
