Resident Evil 8 is back with the new Shadows of Rose DLC. We were already able to hit the horror bite with a certain pinch of magic.

Hamburg – Oops, Resident Evil 8 again? Not quite, with the Shadows of Rose DLC Capcom is now opening another chapter in the Ethan Winters saga. This time, however, we are not controlling our colleague Winters himself, but his daughter Rose. We were able to play Shadows of Rose for almost half an hour and tell you whether Capcom’s expansion will be more tragic or magical.

Shadows of Rose: We just can’t get rid of the Resident Evil mansion

Anyone who thought Resident Evil 8 was actually over long ago was wrong. In Shadows of Rose, we return to the mansion from the main game as Rose Winters. The task is clear: Rose has magical powers, but would rather not have them at all. So we’re looking for a way to get rid of the unloved magic skills.

Conveniently, we can use the magic until it has faded, but also for our purposes. This is where Shadows of Rose clearly differs from the main game Resident Evil 8. Because with Rose you can do magic as you please. One of her abilities in our preview session was a stasis skill of sorts.

Like Dead Space’s Isaac Clarke, Rose is able to essentially freeze monsters for a short period of time. Meanwhile, headshots are a breeze. But watch out: After using it three times, Rose will run out of strength. The stasis skill also wants to be used carefully in Resident Evil.

Rose uses other powers, for example, to manipulate her surroundings. Sticky excesses can be turned into ashes and dust by holding the shoulder button. This opens up new paths in Shadows of Rose and find items that were previously covered by the outgrowths.

Resident Evil: Shadows of Rose plays it safe

As far as Resident Evil 8’s main mechanics go, Shadows of Rose stays on safe paths. Anyone who has internalized the crafting system and the cumbersome controls of the main game will also find their way around the DLC for Resident Evil 8 very well. In fact, during the time we spent with Shadows of Rose, everything stayed the same.

The same goes for the scary factor. If you put your hand on the controller yourself, the cold sweat remains a faithful companion on the pad, even with Rose’s powers. For old hands with horror, the level of horror in Shadows of Rose should be in the middle of the range, just like in the main game.

If you couldn’t get enough of Resident Evil 8, you should definitely put Shadows of Rose on your notepad. If you hope for a playful revolution, you should definitely lower your expectations. Shadows of Rose looks set to be a fun yet spooky DLC in the gameplay spirit of Resident Evil 8, but playing it safe – anyone who’s played Village knows that’s quite a compliment.
