Nvidia RTX 4090 & 4080: The new graphics cards can do that

Nvidia’s new GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards were officially announced on Tuesday. According to the manufacturer, it is a “quantum leap” for gamers and creative people. Here you can find out what the RTX 4090 and 4080 should be able to do.

After a number of hints on social media, the technical details of Nvidia’s new graphics cards are now known. Like the company on its site announced, one can expect two to four times the speed compared to the previous models. This did not increase the power consumption.

Higher speed, less power

Nvidia gives precise information on the speed of the new models: The RTX 4090 should be twice as fast as the RTX 3090 Ti and consume the same amount of power. The RTX 4090 delivers:

• 16,384 CUDA cores
• 1,321 tensor TFLOPS
• 191 RT TFLOPS
• 83 shader TFLOPS
• 24GB G6X VRAM

The RTX 4080 also offers twice the speed compared to the 3080 Ti, with a savings of 10 percent in energy consumption. It is available in two versions.

The RTX 4080 with 16GB of GDDR6X memory delivers:

• 9,728 CUDA cores
• 780 tensor TFLOPS
• 113 RT TFLOPS
• 49 shader TFLOPS

The RTX 4080 with 12GB of GDDR6X memory delivers:

• 7,680 CUDA cores
• 639 tensor TFLOPS
• 92 RT TFLOPS
• 40 shader TFLOPS

New technologies under the hood

In the Founders Edition, Nvidia increased the size of the ventilation fans by 10 percent and upgraded to a 23-phase power connection. Nvidia’s technical marketer, Andrew Burnes, comments on this The Verge. The memory temperatures have been reduced and the new GPUs are said to offer excellent overclocking potential.

In addition, the new DLSS 3.0 AI (Deep Learning Super Sampling) should match consecutive frames while playing. According to the manufacturer, it can then generate completely new frames on this basis. As The Verge writes, Nvidia has demonstrated how the use of DLSS 3.0 more than doubled the frame rate of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

While the GeForce RTX 4080 models should not be available until November, the RTX 4090 will be released on October 12th. The prices of the new graphics cards are as follows in the German market:
