Star Citizen: Crowdfunding breaks the 500 million mark

Star Citizen (Simulation) von Cloud Imperium Games

The corks are popping at Cloud Imperium Games, the donation pot for Star Citizen is growing immeasurably. The fact that the game is still a long way from completion doesn’t seem to bother us much.

The crowdfunding campaign for the space simulation and spiritual successor to Wing Commander started in 2012 with a whopping two million dollars. That amount has multiplied over the past ten years – although development at Cloud Imperium Games, led by industry veteran Chris Roberts, is very slow and the game is far from finished.

As much as necessary, as little as possible

Of course there are always a few updates for the backers that should keep them happy. The single-player campaign Squadron 42 is particularly well received – or at least the part of it that is reasonably playable. Recently there were shipwrecks that drift abandoned in space and small settlements can be visited on the planet’s surfaces from time to time, but they are also deserted.

In the meantime, 4,096,384 backers have ensured that despite the game’s perpetual alpha status, an incredible $500,075,150 has been flushed into the game’s development pool. This makes Star Citizen the most expensive and still unfinished game that has ever seen the light of day. There is no further information from Cloud Imperium Games as to whether and when the space simulation is really finished
