Star Citizen: Over $500 million in crowdfunding

from Rhonda Bachman
The ambitious space simulation Star Citizen from Cloud Imperium Games has reached a new milestone in financing. Crowdfunding has now raised more than $500 million. Star Citizen has been in development for over ten years.

The developers of Cloud Imperium Games can announce a new success for their space simulation Star Citizen. The title recently reached the new funding milestone of over US$500 million. In the meantime, 500,112,434 US dollars have been collected from 4,096,723 eager donors (as of September 21, 2022, 1 p.m.). Although the ambitious sci-fi game has also attracted a number of private donors, the bulk of the money comes from crowdfunding from fans of the title.

Star Citizen in development for more than a decade

Star Citizen has now been in development for over ten years. In 2010, development work began on the game, which went into production in 2011. The title was announced in September 2012 via a private crowdfunding page before a successful Kickstarter campaign followed in October 2012. At that time, more than 2 million US dollars could be raised via Kickstarter.

The last major financing milestone was reached last November. The developers announced at the time that they had reached $400 million for the game. It has now taken just under ten months to raise another $100 million through crowdfunding.

However, even after more than a decade, there is still no final release date for Star Citizen. Cloud Imperium Games is already discussing several sequels to Squadron 42, the single-player part of Star Citizen. In February, the developers stated that they wanted to focus their full attention on the single player. New features for Star Citizen are scheduled to come to Squadron 42 first before making their way into the Persistent Universe.
